I had a very similar experience. I was a transfer student and was looking for ways to make friends. I didn't approach anyone about sorority life, because it wasn't anything I was considering, but I was approached by this really friendly, sweet, outgoing girl and we just starting chatting while waiting in line for coffee. She invited me to an info session that evening, and I went because I started thinking "Maybe I was wrong about sororities. This girl was really nice...not at all what I thought sorority girls were like. And if the rest of the sorority is also this friendly, then maybe I could fit in in a sorority." The random girl who started talking to me in the coffee line became my big sis.
For me, I gained a lot of self-confidence and leadership skills. I used to be really shy and terrified of public speaking. In high school, I had been in marching band and ski club, but I never took on any leadership roles because I didn't think I would be any good. Being in a sorority and having all of my sisters cheering me on and telling me they believe in me really helped me to believe in myself and believe that I could take on leadership roles and do them well. I'm still not 100% comfortable speaking in front of a group of people or meeting new people, but I've gotten a lot better than I used to be. I've come out of my shell a lot. I've also had so much fun just hanging out with my sisters, and it's really made for a memory-packed college experience. There are lots of other things I've gained from my sorority, but I think my two big reasons for joining were for personal growth and to make friends.
