See though, you are also making assumptions about how it is in the South. My chapter, as well as countless others that I know of, are very involved in their campus and their philanthropy. If you are a strong chapter at a big Southern university, there is a good chance that you and your fellow top chapters have a strong influence on the way things function on campus. Also, I know of many many chapters that go to great lengths to raise money for their philanthropic organizations. For example, SAE's do All Greek Boxing tournaments at many campuses, and down here, the FIJIs do a week long party/basketball tournament called Round Up that functions as a huge rush event while at the same time raising thousands upon thousands of dollars for the community. Grades are also important. Every chapter I know of has grade requirements and good overall GPA's. The notion that Southern fraternities are full of no-go-to-class fuck ups is a common misnomer.

Being in a great fraternity down here is so much more than what you listed. I have extremely good friends, a longstanding tradition pertaining to our chapter, connections for a lifetime, etc. etc. Sure, our house is incredible and the parties are great and such.......but those are not the only thing we look for...I can assure you.

And the hair gel thing is somewhat of a joke and somewhat serious. I think gelling your hair makes you look fruity and unsophisticated. When I go to a job interview at a firm....I can assure you the partners would rather talk to a man with well groomed normal hair and a nice suite and tie than some dude with his hair sticking straight up wearing tight fitting flat front Bananna Republic pants and a vertical striped shirt.
