Thumbs down

[QUOTE=carnation]The kids haven't changed much over the years but boy, the parents have...they'll be in there in 2 seconds screaming if their darling gets a 98 instead of his usual 100. Even on the college level. I haven't had to deal with parents actually harassing college profesors yet but some of my colleagues have.

Interesting article on these "Helicopter Parents":

High school French teacher checking in....as far as making a difference, I think at the high school level you may never know if you made a difference or not. I say that because some students are just motivated regardless of what I do, and to others a smile on a bad day may make a difference.

I fell into teaching when I went back for my MA after a semester off and working in the computer industry. I was a TA at the university and had a good time teaching there. One of my MA colleagues had an opening at his school for a French and German teacher - I interviewed and got the job. I'm now at a different school and only teaching French (my passion). Some people say that anyone can be a teacher, but I really don't think that is true. If anyone could do it, more people would stay. Had I listened to my grandma when I was 15, I would have been a teacher from the start- she knew I had it in me.

Best wishes to all GC teachers and student teachers for a successful academic year. Keep up with the professional development!

I passed my LAST state requirement! I've been teaching with a temp. certified here in the city for the last 3 years but now my perm. state certification paperwork can go through!

This last requirement was a videotaped lesson. Talk about stressful. It'd being phased out by the state and I can see why!!

Congratulations!

As for making a difference: When I taught 1st grade, it was easy to see. I taught at an inner city school in Dallas. I really enjoyed working with the kids. The majority came into school on the first day not knowing how to do anything! And to hear/see them reading and writing at the end of the year made me feel great.

With middle school and high school, I don't think you see the impact that you make quite so easily. I know I had secondary teachers who got me interested in certain subjects or books and they may not have even realized it. I think the impact we make is further down the road and a little bit quieter.
