Game systems for Idiots

I tried looking this up already but it was all old. So........

My future roomie and I are interested in getting a somewhat cheap gaming system that will allow us to just get back after class or when we are ultra bored. But we dont' want to spend a fortune on something that in 2 months will be outdated or something that already is about to be outdated. We don't know much and have looked around but we can't decide what we want or what is best.

Basically, we are looking for something for fun not serious gaming. Just laid back, not to complicated games.

Any advice?

Check out used video game stores. You could probably pick up a game cube there for cheap (I would check right after the new Nintendo comes out as many people will be trading in their old one). Game Cube should still be good for awhile as there are currently many, many games for it, and they'll still probably come out with some after the new one is released. Plus, I think it doubles as a DVD player.

The Gamecube doesn't double. Its disks are tiny and it won't hold a DVD size. The advice is still good though. Nintendo is releasing some of its new games on the game cube as well. For 200 or so you can get a Wii when it comes out. (Clearly, my obsession right now) but look around at game stores and see what they have used.

I was pretty sure that the Wii was going to be less than $150 when it came out?

The problem is that everything either has or is about to change over to the next generation of systems. Xbox 360 came out last year, PS3 (which I'm planning on getting due to I prefer PS as a platform and Blu-ray) is coming out in Nov, and Wii will be out soon as well.

So you either take an older system you can get for cheap, or wait and pay a lot for something that is brand new. I think you are best off getting a PS2 or regular Xbox, both of which double as a DVD player, have a wide variety of games and while not top of the line provide some very quality gaming experiences.

I like to play video games - but i'm not into the high tech 'gaming' world like some people. I went on ebay and bought the original NES with 8 games for $50.

All the Super Mario Bros and Zelda games were included.

I'm such a dork - I even bought the thing that you replace to keep it from blinking so that all the games still play.....sorry, but I can't remember what that 'thing' is called. It was a whole $1 and easy to replace.

Wii is going to be $250 I heard.

It depends on the type of game that you liek to play IMO. If your like me and can't get enough of Mario/Sonic/Pac Man etc, then go for a Game Cube or wait for the Wii.

You could pick up a used Nintendo or Super Nintendo. Those won't run you much money, and are easy to use (if I remember correctly).
