I have to agree with y'all too, especially living in cramped quarters like you described, like row houses, buildings, etc. It's really bound to happen, and all you can do is fight them, lol. You have no control how the person downstairs or upstairs from you lives, or the person that lived there before you lived, so you may have them through no fault of your own. I don't have them now and sure hope to never see them again, but sometimes you can't help it.
