opposed to any song lyric being translated.

also, French literature is best read in French. Just ask super-hottie Ashley Judd.

Pulp Fiction loses something when dubbed over with some Eastern European language (like on Hostel.) just give it subtitles, and you won't lose the very distinct delivery of Samuel L. Jackson's lines.

When Patti Griffin sings Mil Besos, it's sensual. An English translation of the song would sound corny and have an unnatural pace.

I am surprised that they used Royal Academy Spanish instead of Latin American Spanish. This is especially obvious in the 2nd person plurals.

It's just hilarious when people are complaining that anyone who comes here needs to learn/use English and most of them are doing it wrong.

If you read the link in my first reply to this thread, it's the same topic in the SGRho forum. The OP, throughout her entire first post ranting about this, used the word "sang" EVERY TIME instead of "sung". I agree that you can't complain about other's English skills when you continue to make blatant mistakes with the English language.

I take care of too many patients that do not speak the language AND have been in the country for a LONG time... there is no excuse for that. I don't know how I would buy groceries, buy anything for that matter if I couldn't communicate with the person selling me the stuff. I'll never understand that.

In cases like this (older immigrants who've been here for a while) I'm torn. Neither of my grandparents learned English (besides easy words) and they came here in 1956. My grandfather got by with a job somehow. I've noticed that a lot of older immigrants have very broken English, or never learned the language. But I think in this day that people should learn at least the basics. Back then schools and such didn't accommadate (sp? i know) to those immigrants- at least not in my family's case-, but those students had to learn English. Now my niece who was in PRESCHOOL was learning Spanish. Ok it's good to know a 2nd language and learning at a young age is better, but when you think about WHY schools are teaching it you have to wonder.

It's important that they at least teach kids the basic spanish phrases they'll need to know as adults:

"Mow the front yard only."

"Clean all of the upstairs toilets."

"The floor needs to be vacuumed."

Four years ago, I got called to jury duty. When we were in the courtroom waiting for the attorneys to pick a jury, the judge asked "is there anyone in this room who doesn't speak enough English to understand me?" No one got up. When a Korean immigrant was brought to the stand to be questioned, he sat there with a confused look on his face and didn't answer. After someone was able to translate for him, it turned out that he is an American citizen, had lived in America for 32 years at this point, had a business, and yet, despite all of this, spoke virtually no English. I found it sad that after living somewhere for 32 years, it was possible to know so little about it. My grandparents moved to America 12 years ago, and while her English is far from perfect, my grandmother knows enough to get around and understand what people are saying.

Isn't this about like saying "If you're not here, say so" or "Anyone who is deaf, please speak now"? If they don't speak English, you CAN'T ask IN ENGLISH if people don't speak English. And even if they know enough English to understand that question, they aren't going to pick it out of the rest of the giberish they are hearing.

SO HILARIOUS!! NOT. There is a big difference between misspellings/absent commas and not being able to write at all. I thought all Cooley students knew that

Offensive how? It's the truth that most of the border jumpers work as maids/day laborers.
