Heather, I'm glad you mentioned the"hinged" tree. That's what ours is.
Another thing about prelit ones is...We had a branch lose half it's lights. I changed the fuse and everything. It still didn't work. Sure it has a guarantee on it, but I'm not going to bother sending it back. I just moved the branches around and took out another layer (so the cords would match up) It actually looks MORE real than before.

Bumping this up...we really meant to get a new one 5 years ago and then moved and now we really really intend to look! For a real-looking one, that is. Any ideas? Brand names? Things to avoid?

Where the heck can you get a tree before Halloween?
My sister had a silk one several years ago. I have a PhD in horticulture and I thought it was real for 2 days!!!! But I've never seen another one like it--I'd love one like that.

I had to buy a new one this year - last year, my cats (then kittens) climbed my old one and knocked it over, and it snapped in half!
This year, I bought one at SuperTarget. It's 6' tall and kind of skinny, with hinged branches but no preattached lights, and it cost me $18. I figured that, for eighteen bucks, if the cats break this one I'll just buy another one. It's proven to be pretty sturdy, though; they've knocked it over twice already, and it's still intact.

I think the most realistic looking ones are the ones with the most branches. That's what I paid attention to when I bought mine and I'm very happy with it. Also, a lot of it is in how you "fluff" the branches. If you don't do it well, it won't look good.

In 2004, my friend "researched" all the trees she could. She's very thorough about these kinds of things, much more than myself, so I went on her opinion. She recommended KMart's Martha Stewart pre-lit tree (not sure if they still have them).
So that's what we ended up getting one too. But since Kmart.com was sold out, I resorted to ebay & luckily found one for sale there.

We also own a Martha Stewart pre-lit tree and absolutely loved it. Been using it for two years and it's great! It saved us all the hassle of wrapping on and off lights on the tree.

I Have a fake tree also. I LOVE real trees....the scent is sooo wonderful! I buy from yankee candle the tree scent candles and put them on candle warmers throughout the house. I just dont like the bark sap, needles everywhere , and the potential fire danger. I bought a few yrs ago i believe to be the perfect tree ever. I am a real stickler for the tree look. I like a very a symetrical very full and very tall tree. I have a catheral vaulted ceiling in the formal lving room and a huge picture window so i bought this beautiful tree at Lowes which is pre strung with tiny white lights. I completely fill it in with real pretty ornaments, chrismtas silk florals ,and chrystalized(spl??) fake christmas fruit i usually get at after christmas sales.
