I would recommend lots of water, fruits and vegetables. I love strawberries and grapes so I try to keep them handy. You don't have to join a gym right off the bat. You can just start taking walks. I think it will work best if you take it slow. It also will become a lifestyle change. Make it fun and find activities that you enjoy otherwise you will get bored and you will become discouraged. If you cheat or whatever don't beat yourself up just do better next time.
It is easier if you have a workout partner. Someone who motivates you not someone who keeps trying to get you to go to McDonalds

Also, this is just me but I stay away from scales! I'm small but I've never believed in getting people caught up in how much they weigh. Use your clothes as an indicator. That scale will drive you MAD!
