You are on the right road. Keep over head low! I have worked with orgs that don't know this. Try to find a good photographer who is good. He or she may be able to use the calendar as part of his or her portfolio.
When I did this for an arts organization, we used the selection process as a way to build buzz. We put all of the art on display and let everyne interested to come see the art that may be in the calendar. When the calendar was released, we had a reception for the artist that had made the cut. We invited the public and had light food and drink. I know that you all will not be able to serve cocktails. All food was donated, and the wine was sold to us a a discount. The local papers came and covered both events.
