PSU IFC bans strippers & jello wrestling

From today's Penn State Daily Collegian:
"Fraternities that feature exotic dancers and exploit a legal loophole during rush week may soon see explicit regulations in an amended version of the Constitution of the Interfraternity Council. IFC Executive Vice President Shaun Clair said restrictions on exotic dancers and other such forms of entertainment were originally only implied.
.
Lewd acts like exotic dancing, stripping, prostituting and Jell-O wrestling would be included in the proposed amendment revision.
.
Because many fraternities have already booked their entertainment for the spring rush week, IFC Vice President of Membership Grant Miller said the amendment would be fully enforced in the fall semester. Some members of greek life expressed disappointment over the revamped constitution."

When I was in school, the entertainment during sorority rush consisted of skits based on the Wizard of Oz or with a 50's theme like "Leader of the Pack". I'm pretty sure a Chippendales appearance would have been frowned on....

Evidently PSU's IFC is rub by the Taliban.

What is wrong with having strippers? It's wonderful. Strippers have made America what it is today. Next they're going to go into the bars and tell all the hooker girls to wear long skirts.

And holy crap, prostituting??

Penn State sororities are also working on changes to their policies on social events, according to the student paper:
Panhellenic Council President Annie Larimer said the national organizations of Panhellenic sororities have bylaws dealing with socials, such as where they can be held and the substances that are allowed.

However, the Penn State chapters haven't abided by these rules in the past, Larimer said.

She said that in the past year and a half, the national organizations have stepped in and are taking action against those breaking the rules.

She said the council is encouraging chapters to follow the rules, because the national organizations have the right to shut down any chapter for violations.

Panhellenic Council Vice President of Communications Julie Hochman said the council is not aware of a specific set of rules for Penn State sororities, but it is working on creating regulations to enforce.

In addition, one Penn State fraternity has "voluntarily disbanded" because of difficulties following a party (some pledges are facing legal charges):
Kappa Sigma fraternity members voluntarily disbanded their chapter at Penn State after being evicted from their house Jan. 8, because the fraternity was unable to cover housing costs.

The members moved out of the fraternity house, 225 Highland Ave., after five members and four students pledging the fraternity had their memberships revoked because they attended a party unsanctioned by the fraternity on Nov. 18, 2005, at the house, Mike Samick, fraternity member, said.

One of the women who attended the event was found at 5 a.m. the next day next to Tau Kappa Epilson fraternity, 346 E. Prospect Ave., with serious back and neck injuries, which police suspect resulted from a fall from at least a second-story window, according to court documents.

According to court documents, police discovered the fall victim had consumed alcohol at Kappa Sigma earlier that night, and two men pledging the fraternity . . . were charged with furnishing alcohol to minors and unlawful acts related to liquor, malt and brewed beverages and licenses.

Okay, but a few girls drinking underage at some events does NOT compare to strippers, prostitutes and jello-wrestling at rush

Should they have bible study during rush? Maybe they should hold hands and serenade the rushes with cute songs like the sororities.

if you have to use strippers and jello wrestling to get guys to join your fraternity, then what do you really have to offer? they can't just hang out with the guys and watch a movie/sports game, play poker or a game of basketball? are those the guys you really want. plus fraternities have some sort of moral standards or basis in their org.....i'm not sure where strippers and jello-wrestling fall into that. if the nationals are okay with those things, i think it is only appropriate to not do them during rush. it's like bribbing guys to join, with the promise of alcohol or sex. i would almost guarantee these fraternities can get great guys without using strippers and such for recruitment. i commend PSU for taking a stance. now the question is wheteher they will enforce the rule....

			*sigh*

I remember attending a couple of the parties with the strippers at a couple different frats. They were always some of the most popular ones and they all had the same kind of guys: Abercrombie rich types.

I find it more interesting that PHC is moving towards 3rd party socials. Considering the upheaval that happened during the fall, I'm not that surprised.

is ramen noodle wrestling allowed? maybe that only happens at rutgers.

a fraternity here lost their charter after selling tickets for a raffle where the prize was taking a shower with the stripper.

i guess that's how you recruit quality men.

How did that reflect on their quality?

Did it make them violent?

Did it make them lack the intelligence to get a high paying job?

Did it make them want to eat babies?

Did it make them want to watch cricket instead of baseball?

Did it make them worship the devil?

Did it make them steal from an old lady?

Morality is hard to define and changes with time. Your founders would probably take issue with the length of the skirts you women wear. Furthermore, one fraternity or sorority or the IFC has no right to regulate the morality of others. Your founders founded your sorority and mine founded my fraternity. You have every right to have a preference for something and a dislike for acts like this, but what purpose does it serve anyone to force those preferences on other people? I wouldn't marry some frat slut but hey if someone else wants to, fine.

There are a lot of founders who would hate minorities, members of the middle class, northerners, midwesterners, and non slave owners gaining entrance to their greek organizations.

The founders of several national fraternities that I know of might have written elaborate and idealistic rituals etc. but I would highly doubt that they were the great bastions of morality and justice that a lot of people revere them as.

PSU is just arguing over semantics, the only thing this is going to change is that the rush events are going to strip clubs instead of having strippers at the house, which is probably a better bet in the first place.

As far as quality of a person goes, I don't think low class = high quality.

Clearly it's illegal to have sex with a woman for money.

 Not in Nevada.

Besides morality does not equal legality. Slavery was legal but immoral. And I am sure you have either jaywalked or drank alcohol prior to being 21. In some places it's illegal to talk in an elevator.

I tell you what. If a girl wants to be a hooker, I will think it's kinda gross and all that. I won't date her. But I also don't want to tell her sorority what rules to put into place. They should do that on their own. That's all I'm saying
