People in the U.S. have died from hate crimes against gays. I think it's safe to say that it is not totally acceptable in our culture either. So, I'm not quite buying the issue of it being ok here and that's why he decided to explore.
I think that Jonathan sounded unprepared because he was trying too hard to sound proper and polite instead of simply saying the honest truth. That's exactly what Terry was doing and why she may have sounded more natural and prepared.
