It's like from "When Harry Met Sally" at the beginning when Harry tells Sally that guys and girls can not be "just friends" At some point (like AlphaGam said) one person ALWAYS wants more. It doesn't mean that platonic opposite sex friendships can't happen. My best friend is a guy (no he's not gay) but we were definitely had some chemistry on both sides at one point. No, we never acted on it...but that's another story
