If she had been pretty and white, they would have known about this in Canada.
I conclude that this country is still pretty racist.

I don't think it is only about race...but just about who they are selling news too.
People have much more sympathy for something that is pretty and cute than something...not so pretty and cut.
Everyone feels bad for a kitten that is killed, but who cares about a spider. Both are alive, both could be pets...but one is cute and the other ugly.

(Disclaimer - I know James was kidding)
It frustrates me to no end that the case below has not been solved. I truly hope our police Dept won't let this slip between the cracks. He wasn't missing for that long, but the outcome is horrible:

Murdered Teenager Laid To Rest
POSTED: 12:26 pm EDT October 7, 2005
UPDATED: 5:07 pm EDT October 7, 2005
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mourners at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church Friday afternoon said goodbye to 16-year-old Gregory Goodson. He was found murdered last week in north Charlotte.
Some classmates recalled the thing they'd miss most about their bright, bubbly friend.
"His smile, that's the main thing," said one student.
"He always wore a smile on his face -- always. You could never see him looking sad," said another student.
"He never had any problems with anybody. I don't even know (why) somebody would do something to him like that. He just wasn't that that type of person," said another student. ...

I think this is one of the major points brought up by the topic ... the fact that the 'white' girls are seen as "cuter" than others - and even in the label white there seems to be a hierarchy of sorts.. ie. how many blondes get media attention compared to others?

There was actually quite a bit of press about Olamide Adeyooye, a (black, female) Illinois State University student whose body they just found. Of course, she's cute and she's a co-ed, so I'm sure that helped contribute to the story's popularity:

That was the story I was referencing earlier. It was only picked up by the mainstream news after her friends and her boyfriend did their best to circulate the news of her disappearance through word-of-mouth and the internet.

TP2 - Do you know what the photos are? They look more like a little kid than a 16 year old? In any case, what a sad story.

I think socio-economics have a lot to do with it, too. Compare the Ted Bundy killings to the Green River Killer's. Ted Bundy killed mostly college girls/good looking women, while the GRK killed mostly prostitutes. It took about 20 years to catch the GRK compared to only a couple for Ted Bundy (although we'll never know exactly when he started).

One is a pic of him when he was a little boy. The other one is the one that's been circulating on the news. Actually, he would have turned 17 this week. His family had a memorial for him. Sad.
