Alum Chapter Websites

Does anyone help maintain their alum chapter websites? I'm looking for a idealy free web hosting service or one that is pretty cheap. Any advice/suggestions?

Thanks!!

I'm not a webmaster for any alum chapters, but I do keep sites for Miss Louisiana and assorted locals. I use Bravenet/0catch for my free hosting. You may also want to check any local ISPs out in your community to see if they will donate space to you. This worked for Miss Louisiana; we have a local ISP donate our space.

The only drawback to having a free space is the probability of having ads on your site. This is something I have to contend with when using a free host, but some ads can be tolerable.

You may also want to get your local campus to donate the space to you. Since you're an alum chapter, you may want to work with the campus that's directly affiliated with your sorority.

Hope this advice helps. It's my paltry .02.

Our webmaster uses the hosting that she gets through her provider (att.net) as part of her email service since she doesn't use it for a personal site.

Geocities.

We have our alum site on geocities.com, now part of Yahoo. The ads are not intrusive or agressive. Other DG alumnae chapters have used them because they are free, easy to use, allow you to either create your own pages and upload them or use a simple tool to create them. For many alumnae, this is the right combination at the right price.

Another good place to make a free web page is moonfruit.com. They have nice design features, it's easy to use, and you hardly notice the ads. Good luck with your project!

Can you set up a website through someone's Earthlink or Comcast account? I used a friend's Earthlink server to host our site for a number of years before we bought our own domain name.

Sites

I maintain both my Alumnae Association site as well as my chapter alumnae website.

I highly recommend www.xbuild.com if you don't know how to make websites but want something fantastic!

http://www.nycalphaxidelta.org (Paid a designer and we get free hosting from our Nationals)

http://www.texasaxidalums.org (I designed myself using a template with xbuild.com. Costs less than $75 a year including hosting.)

Hope this helps someone.
