Perhaps the joke is just a caution to our modern society...not to overcomplicate things.
Simple solutions and explanations are often correct but sadly overlooked.
The chicken did not cross the road to fill out his tax forms, buy the latest fashions, complete a merger-acquistion agreement, file a lawsuit, run a marathon, or mow the lawn.
The chicken simply crossed the road to get to the other side. There is no better way to get to the other side than walking across that road.
Simple. Beautiful. Peaceful. The Chicken.
