Question: Does anyone ever see the NPHC allowing inclusion of a 10th group?

Yes, I see the NPHC allowing including a 10 GLO in, say, 20 years perhaps...

I can see it now playing out like the scene in Revenge of the Nerds:

NPHC President (to the petitioning GLO): Well, I'm sorry to tell you that your application for membership has been denied.

Aspirant GLO President: Excuse me, but uh, why?

NPHC President: Well, according to our bylaws, you must have at least 100 chapters, half of which must have been in existence for at least ten years. Do you have them?

Aspirant GLO President: Well uh, no. (NPHC President makes a "Well, there you go" type gesture). But all we have to do is to get those chapters and we're in, right?

NPHC President: Right, right. So, I guess we'll see you in about, say...20 years? (All NPHC members present burst out in fits of laughter).

I don't think another org will join the NPHC within the next 10-20 years. From my experience with younger BGLOs, they were formed specifically to be an alternative to NPHC orgs, so membership in the NPHC would be counter-productive to thier founding principles. I could see the formation of another BGLO council.

Most universities are requiring greek-lettered organization to be affiliated with a national council--somewhat of a tracking/insurance/liability/etc. service for the university.

It was from my understanding on being active with the grad NPHC and interacting with the university, that the university was going to ceremoniously place all NPHC affiliates with a very weak local "greek council", when there has been an established NPHC graduate and undergraduate for years...

Yeah, maybe it had fallen on the wayside, but once picked up, it has taken off.

Most non-greeks do not see the behind the scenes work that goes on within these councils. And most non-traditional greek organizations that are outside the IFC and NPC do not see all the requirements that must be done to maintain their organizations. However, when one has the opportunity to observe the behind the scenes action, I think it might better help them make decisions on what exactly the greek-lettered organization they wish to pursue.

But you know young people. They won't investigate that much into stuff before they rush to judgement...

I don't know all the qualifacations but I do know that the current NPHC members don't have any religious, career, or other additions as qualifacations for membership, ie. we don't have the words "Christian", "Business", "Nursing", "Homosexual", etc attached to our org titles. OK, just to show everyone I do have a heart, I will make a confession: There is one element of the NPHC that I have secretly always admired and will always be remembered in my heart until the day I die:

The NPHC orgs can tho' down some of the most krunkest parties I have ever attended in my life. I was listening in my car Old School Sunday on the local hip hop station, and I had caught some major Greek party flashbacks listenin' to some of the tunes from the early and mid 90s. Whoo! I was always the first to show up to the party and the last to leave.

Notable parties I attended:

OSU Block Party, 5/15/92 (I was a week-old neo and it was off the chain!)

Fall 1993 Icebreaker, 9/25/93; held on the same day as the Capital City Classic, was also on my 20th birthday.

Alpha Phi Alpha State Conference Weekend, weekend of 11/19 & 11/20/93. Party at the Hyatt Hotel went until 4 a.m.

Iota Phi Theta Winter 94 Icebreaker, 1/7/94

Kappa Alpha Psi One Nation Under A Groove Jam, 1/19/94. I rode my bicycle in single digit weather to an off campus party house and it was WELL worth the trip!

Delta Sigma Theta Crimson and Cream Ball 5/13/94 - I took a cab ride to catch this party and sported my brand new $120 fraternity badge and had an awesome time. I have a pic of me at the event I might upload at a later time.

OSU African American Heritage Festival 5/14 & 5/15/99 – Gamma Sigs representin’ on OSU’s campus for the very first time. Also numerous APO brothers were in attendace.

OSU African American Heritage Festival 5/19/01 – My last Greek party I attended. It was outdoors and it was COLD (39 degrees), but it didn’t keep folk from representin’. Me? I had a cup of hot delicious Tim Horton’s coffee and I was ret’ to go.

Sorry for the hijack, yall; but I didn’t want anyone to think I felt that I was totally against NPHC orgs, because that’s not true at all.

Considering all of the wonderful things the NPHC does, the fact that you listed partying is very insulting.

To answer the question, perhaps. I don't really see the need for another group in the NPHC. We have enough issues already. Beyond fraternalism, as someone mentioned, member organizations have a financial responsibily to fuflill to the council. Younger groups may have problems satisfying their obligations.

RainMan, seriously, whatever your issue is with the NPHC, let it go. There are bigger things going on in the the world that you may actually have control over.

ETA, and if it is that serious to you RM, then become an active, financial member of one of our fine 5 NPHC fraternities, attend the meetings of the NPHC, and then bring up your concerns to them.
