Housing
Hi girls,
I am the president of DG at Salisbury University--a university close to the maryland beaches. Our greek percentage is 6% and growing!! The problem we are running into is we're outgrowing everything...meeting room..greek leadership house..ect. I contacted EO on their stance on us getting a chapter house. All the greeks are for the idea of creating "Frat Row" and the school supports it. If the house is owned by the university we can have as many people live in it as possible--we are at 50 now (we lost alot of seniors!), but are doing back to back recruitments since we are changing over to deferred recruitment. I anticipate that because of this we should prob be at least at 70 this spring--it all depends on how many girls come out. My question here is how did you all begin to raise the money to obtain a chapter house. Housing on the eastern shore is pretty cheap...about $200,000 for a decent size house! Also keep in mind we are the baby on campus--only founded in 1996!! So its not like we have prosperous alum either--they are just getting their feet on the ground as well. ANY IDEAS??
Ashley

Do the other chapters on campus have houses? If they do, Housing Corporation should be able to help out in finding a house for you guys. We colonized in 2002 and immediatly had a house on our Greek Court (actually the University said that if we were picked to colonize, DG would have to sign a 4 year lease). The girls that live in the house pay rent (to house corp. and house corp. pays the University) and everyone in the chapter pays a "parlor fee" to pay for upkeep of the common areas.
Contact the DG House Corporation to see what they can do for you...

No our school doesn’t currently have Greek Housing. We have already talking to the president of the University and she is all for it. I’ve asked EO for help but they say we aren’t eligible and it won’t work but I don’t understand why not—especially since brand new chapters get houses right away with fewer numbers than us! I guess if there is anyone who made this kinda move out there and could tell me how they went about it—that would be great. We already have a Greek committee on the issue so it will eventually happen—we just don’t know how many years!!!

Hmmm, the way I would approach it is to tell your Panhellenic Resource for your Region (Region 2, I believe) as well as your Regional Housing Director. Let them know that you are in talks with the university and believe that Greek housing is an upcoming reality (but you don't know when). Ask them what you should do now to prepare.
I don't think DG will want you to be at a disadvantage if your whole Greek system goes to housing. They will help you all raise funds. Also, you have a House Corporation right now, even if you don't have a house. Have you informed them of this eventuality?

as you can see this is kind of a mess. Luckily I met someone on GC whose moving to our area and HOPEFULLY starting an alum chapter. I agree--dg wont want us to be behind if everyone gets housing. Our local house corp is MIA. Her phone has been disconected and I personally have never met her. I know this whole thing isnt going to be easy but if I can push my chapter as far as it can go before I graduate it will be worth it. Im gonna contact the panhell assoc. closest to us. I just want us to have a home...not one we have to share with all the student organizations. Any more suggestions!! This is really helping!! Yah deegees!!

Is anyone on GC from Washington & Jefferson? I see they are putting up housing right now. They look like they are going to be pretty big. Plus W&J is similar size to my chapter so I'm curious as to how they raised money, ect.

I'll admit I don't know where in Maryland you are located, but there IS and alumnae chapter in Baltimore:

So I don't follow your comment about a friend starting one. This chapter seems to be very active.
Also, since you are in Region 2, you can find your regional housing director email at:
http://www.deltagamma.org/housing_team.shtml
The regional person can surely answer your more specific questions. Good luck!

Baltimore Alum chapter is about 2 1/2 hours from us. They are right outside of University of Maryland. I met the president at region 2 conference. They have been helpful but the problem is the distance. The eastern shore is basically like its own little state and not having an alum chapter close by does hurt us a little bit, especially since all the other GLO have local alum chapters...Finding an advisory team for the chapter was like pulling teeth!! Thanks to the post about contacting our regions panhell person!! Im def going to do that!
