I have a wireless router setup at home that's about 30 feet from the dinning room table where I sit at my laptop. But because the kitchen is between me and the router I get a weakened signal. Lots of things can play into interference, especially wireless phones running at 2.4GHz. Test by moving your roomies pc closer to the router, or the router closer to the computer. That will rule out faulty equipment.
