Agreed. I have heard so many people say, "I read three pages of it and couldn't see what the big deal was." You can't judge a book on three pages! Rowling's strengths are not in her magnificent prose or anything -- they're in plotting, in creating a universe that extends throughout a very long series, in tying all the little things together. They are the kind of strengths that can only be viewed in the large picture, not in three pages. And to be honest, I know NO people who have read an entire book all the way through and not enjoyed it. Some of them have read a book all the way through and not gotten the hype, but that's understandable -- the books ARE overhyped. But that doesn't mean they're not a fun read.

Seriously, I get that some people out there don't want to read the books. That's fine. But to go out and actively try to ruin the experience for people who do enjoy them -- why is that funny? Do people get enjoyment out of going around telling their friends GUESS WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF FIGHT CLUB! I KNOW YOU'VE BEEN WANTING TO SEE IT FOREVER SO I'LL TELL YOU!

Anyway I just finished it, but I will take that commentary to the other thread.

KIDS AND TEENAGERS ARE READING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That should outweigh how annoying they think it is and as a teacher, at least their reading!!!!!!
Agreed. I haven't read any of the books (but have seen the movies ), however, my 13 year old has flown thru all of the books and has been saving his allowance so that he can get the deluxe edition. Even after the spoiler though - I think I'll definately read this one. I'll wait for my son to finish (it'll only take him a few days...).

On another note - did you guys see this in our forum?

What is sad is that we all know those zealous fanatics out there who are totally opposed to HP are going to try to use this families pain and the situation to get HP out of schools and out of libraries. When in actuality the man had serious MENTAL ISSUES if he said that he had "no reason to live" because of spoilers for A BOOK and then commits suicide. Hello, let's think about this for a second!!!!!!!

I honestly got a little angry when I read that line....hehe. Good stuff.

Um.... That page is a JOKE right? Under the banner of the page it says this: "Winner of the First-ever National Press Club Award for Humor"

I seriously doubt that someone actually committed suicide over this.

A quote from the story: “In my heart I believe that could have saved Jude’s life, even if he didn’t have one,” she said. Come on guys, who would say that?

That's how I took it...

Now, I might commit suicide because most of you have already finished the book and I'm holding out until next week - the pressure may get to me....

I think so..... But it had me going for a minute (ok - maybe 2 minutes ). Wikipedia says Andy Borowitz is a comedian & satirist that writes parody news.

But how many zealous people will take it seriously to try to make a point? That is the problem. There are tons of people out there who will take anything seriously just to make their point. People hate HP because of the connotation of witchcraft. That was my whole point.

polarpi: why are you holding out until next week? The wedding?

The Onion started something way back when, when it published a little piece about Harry Potter contributing to the rise of satanism among school children...read the piece here on the snopes web-site (I can't get to the Onion archive b/c I'm not a premium member).

Long & the short: there's nothing we can do to stop the zealots, but keep out own sense of humor intact!

You all were lucky about going to the release parties... my bf and I didn't get out until 2 am! I had to sit around in a hot Borders listening to tweens twitter about and scream.

I am never doing that again. I'll stick to amazon. I'm about half way through. One couple shocked the hell out of me... but I'll post in spoilers once I'm through.

I'm only about halfway through also, actually more than halfway but not 3/4 yet. Oh well maybe tomorrow, tuesday at the latest.

I don't know where you're book stores are, and why they're so packed, but I've never had a problem with getting a Harry Potter book.

Granted, I didn't go to any of the midnight releases, but I've walked in the book store first thing in the morning and just picked one up. No lines, no traffic. Nothing.

Friends have been telling me they've been walking into non-bookstores (Target, FRY'S???) and just walking out with it and no lines to be haggled with. I'm just mad because I think I paid way too much for it. Some placed listed it for $13.99!!!! Stupid Borders.
