When you guys are talking, just tell him you don't want to mess up the friendship, but you're really into him and wanted to see how he feels. If he just wants a friendship, he'll say so. Might hurt your feelings and be a bit awkward, but it's better than trying to drop hints (either he won't notice or he'll ask you why you're being so weird and that's definitely worse). Just be straight up, works for me.
