We have done this at my particular chapter. We call them "friends of the fraternity". We basically assign them this status if for some reason they are unable to join but they are really close with us. For example, one guy worked at our bookstore and came down to the house all the time but didn't go to Gannon so we let him become a "friend". They dont have to pay dues or anything like that. I believe they are allowed to wear letters, but I'm not sure because the ones I know I have never seen wearing letters. They can also wear the pin and can give the traditional fraternity "greeting" to brothers. We've only done this about 4 or 5 times in the 15 years our chapter has been in existence.
