Rodeo Dr. of course has great shopping but if you don't want to send all of your money in one trip, the Santa Monica Promenade has better prices
great bar: the powerplant (closest thing to an east coast bar I found there)
best restaurant ever: mel's diner, right down the street from the power plant
I was there on business so I didn't have much freetime, that is pretty much all I did besides hang out at friends houses.
If make it to sunset, you have to see Docs, he's the coolest muah fuah on the planet.
