I like talking to a lot of parents but last week at Open House I had a lot of parents in the audience who kept giving me these looks so maybe it was my perception but none of them bothered to introduce themselves. This was in a classroom with a lot of students who are non Black. Some of my parents are WONDERFUL and I LOVE THEM. There are some parents who I sit at games with and have a rapport with who extend the relationship past the classroom. I am a people person and I enjoy talking  -- like y'all didn't know huh?? Some parents just come off as standoffish and they are the ones who fall in the above category.

Okay, I understand you... Even more so, you've introduced a train of thought that I hadn't considered. I am quite positive you feel you are more than capable of fulfilling the requirements of your position. Do you think that because you are black, parents of non-black children view you as less than capable? I'd never really given much thought to how some non-black parents may view black teachers. I gather it must be quite a challenge not only to meet and exceed their expectations but also your peers if they're predominately non-black. I am saying that because I feel that in all careers that we pursue, we have to go above and beyond to prove ourselves.
