True scotch aficionados drink single-malt (distilled from a single batch of malt) rather than a blend. Just remember that in Scotland and Canada, it's 'whisky' and not 'whiskey' as is the case of Ireland and the U.S.

Purists will drink it neat (straight) or with a splash of water, never mixed to dilute the flavor of a good single-malt. If you're drinking a blend such as Chivas, J&B or Johnnie Walker Red, it's not so critical.

Even better than 18-year old Chivas is it's older relative, 21-year old Chivas Royal Salute. Johnnie Walker Blue Label is tops in blends, but mighty expensive. (JW Red - aged 7 years; JW Black - aged 12 years; JW Gold - aged 18 years; JW Blue - uses the finest and rarest scotch, some aged up to 60 years.)
