Iowa State: Kappa Alpha Theta supports CASA at 'Event of Hope'

'Event of Hope' planned for April 14 on campus

Iowa State University students and community members will join with ISU's Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority to support the work of Court Appointed Special Advocates to celebrate the decrease in the number of children killed by abuse in Iowa this last year.

"It shouldn't hurt to be a child" will be the theme of weeklong activities sponsored by Kappa Alpha Theta, which culminates in the annual "Event of Hope."

Sorority member Margaret Shangle, CASA intern and ISU student Emily Fries and CASA coordinator Steve Wards have worked to plan the annual event.

The program will feature a remembrance of victims of child abuse, stories from local CASA volunteers, the lighting of the "lights of hope" for the future and a speech by the executive administrator of the Iowa Child Advocacy Board, Jerry Foxhoven.

CASA also is part of a national organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children by organizing volunteers to serve as the "eyes and ears of judges" in cases involving child abuse and neglect.

Statewide more than 600 court-appointed advocates served more than 1,360 children in Iowa in 2004. Approximately one third of the volunteers are ISU students, and many others are current and retired ISU faculty and staff.

Kappa Alpha Theta is a national supporter of CASA. Members of the chapter at ISU donate time and resources to the area CASA each year.

That's great! I'm sure bluefish81 can tell a little more about the event.
