How did I know that Tom Earp was going to run in here and respond to me?
If "history is history" then perhaps "more informative and/or entertaining" is not in the eye of the beholder. There is very little objectivity in things that we label as "actual facts."

I don't know. If I label something as an actual fact, my assesment is usually objective. I might omit every single detail because I'm not sure about them, but if I see enough primary evidence, I'll accept some things as facts and not opinions, especially in the scientific realm. Then, it is a fact until proven otherwise. What was the thread about again?

From England, huh? Well, Britain was part of the Roman Empire for some time. You could have some Italian (or even Middle Eastern/North African) in you from way back.

Of mixed relations and mixed faces
Topshider, you've done it again boy. You have succeeded in distracting grown folks while grown folks are talking. I think your knowledge of history is nill. Your knowledge of our American history, is only reflective of your knowledge of race relations. Sit back and learn son, you are missing some of the gems of life, especially in regards to the gift of 'the melting pot' that you exist in.

Very true. Or French, Spanish, Asian, Native-American, African, and/or one or two others.

Not that it matters now. He's American, you all are American. I am English. I'm not Viking-saxon-roman-celt-english, I'm just English.
And he's an ass.

We aren't talking the natural sciences here--of course some of that is also subjective and a social construction.
We're talking about "historical facts" of which the exclusion or inclusion of certain details and standpoints can make a helluva difference.

You're right about "historical" facts. "Winners" and "losers" usually have different interpretations about actual events. I do accept actual facts to be true, no matter what the outcome is, if I have did enough cross-referencing. But since history concerns past events, no reenactment can change what happened.

Actually, I think that this country is more of a melting pot than some would like to believe. I mean, I love Chinese and Italian food, Canadian whiskey, and a lot of my clothes are made in Taiwan. Now, it's not like everyone likes each other or anything all sugary, but Americans are influenced by many different cultures. It's not neccesarily a social melting pot but American society does not occur in a vaccum.

I'm glad you concluded with this b/c I was about to ask if you were serious in confessing your taste in food and clothing. Melting pot isn't about "liking" anyone or even about cultural influence. Sure, there are Mexicans working at On The Border and I drink Chai Tea almost everyday but who cares? These groups are still identifiable as distinct racial and ethnic entities, and often subjected to inequality under a privileged race and class system, so the U.S. is more of a "salad bowl" than a "melting pot."
My jogging pants were made in China, in case anyone cares.

When a person speaks of the term or phrase "melting pot", they are only speaking of the cultrually mixed affect of the "melting pot". Discussions about this "pot" are not usually the foundation of the socio-econ-political strata and state of being in our country. Nonetheless, we have to with lucid clarity, acknowledge that the "melting pot" exist. This issue of existence,sub-existences, priviledge, and what not, is a whole other discussion.
