The one that took the cake was this girl who had on a see-through shirt! Many of the older graduate sorors were there and we were just all embarassed for her. I was like "what would possess you to go there?". I really want to pull some of the ladies to the side just to "talk" to them, I just really wanted to ask them if they realized how utterly disrespectful they were being.
The dumbest question, by far, was this one:
"Um, so, like, what do y'all talk about at your chapter meetings? What do you y'all do?"
I just wanted to reschedule the rush for another day. That did it for me.

I read your post, saw that your signature says Spring 2004, and thought I was trapped in the Matrix.
Okay, you're '04 grad chapter and you and your grad chapter sorors were at an undergraduate rush.
Got it

Yep, you got it. It was a rush for a newly chartered chapter.
I was thinking the same thing that someone posted earlier. The older sorors kept saying "It is a new breed. They just don't know. That is why they need mentors". But I was like, couldn't they have at least looked at it like a job interview? At the very least, a job interview. I thought that it was common sense to dress professionally for such an event, but I realize that common sense isn't all that common.

Oh, my word. I would probably have had to leave the room.

How to get "the look" from the members when you attend formal rush...
When I attended rush, it was the first rush in over a decade. The chapter had been suspended back in '95 for only God knows what! Anyways, at the rush, all the interested young ladies were introducing themselves, getting to know the members, asking questions, etc. When it became my turn, I asked: (and I kid you not)
"What did you guys do to get the chapter suspended for so long!?!"
I then proceeded to say,
"I mean, I've heard several appalling rumors about it, but which ones are true?"
I could've kept going, but lucky for me, another interest pinched me, hard. Of course, I then winced and yelped, "OUCH!"
Good thing the members found humor in it, they now call me "SOROR 'speak now, think later.'"
They did however, (much, much later) give me my answer and said: "Everyone wants to know anyways, good for you for being bold enough to ask!"
I was also advised to learn how to hold my tongue.

(((Soror))) I don't know how I would have reacted to that question.

I remember at my rush...this one girl came in like an hour late with blue jeans a T-Shirt and a bubble jacket on. Then when it got to the question and answer period..she asked if the money could be paid in installments or if they could work out a payment plan of some sort...needless to say she didn't make it on my line...LOL

does anyone have their own embarassing rush moments? im more interested in hearing about how u made a fool of yourselves than how "some girl" came to your chapter's rush doing, saying or wearing x, y, z.
chances are none of you ladies probably ever made these mistakes, but we are human, so spill it!

well at my rush i had just come from the dentist for a filling. instead of novacaine they gave me something more along the lines of "byaatch-feel-this-pain-acaine" and that mess had me in pain throughout the whole program that i was crying. so of course people are wondering wth my problem is and the sorors thought i was that nervous. they teased me about it later.

I attend a majority school in Texas, and things are much different at our school. People show up to rush just looking any ole sort of way....
...well my defining moment at MY RUSH was when I snagged my stockings during the drive to campus, so me and 2 of my future line sisters panicked, but we just said we were going to sit in the back....low and behold, the moment we sat down, sorors were like "ya'll come up front, we want to see you all".
So there I am in the front row, with a track meet going down my leg (several runs)....so during the individual introductions, I just stood up and said, my name is so and so and I have a huge run in my stocking! Why did about 3 of them say "we know, we can see it from way back here!" and they started laughing!
I was so emburrusssed
but...it turned out OK!

Soror, maybe I'm just too mean but in my opinion, if a woman doesn't know enough to dress professionally for Rush, perhaps she isn't ready to be a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I say that these women need a little more time to come up to par on their own b/c they are clearly not ready. Maybe I need to learn to be more understanding but I say that the sorority is just not for everyone.

I agree. While I do believe that one should grow within their organization, I do not believe that a GLO should be a training ground or boot camp for the entire girl-to-woman transition. Some of these stories boil down to the lack of common sense...but like my grandmother used to say, common sense ain't common. ((sighing and shaking my head))

i think that's true. too many attend Rush thinking, "they want me" as opposed to "i hope they pick me, let me act accordingly". i know when i went to Rush, i wore black. i didn't want to be caught in the "wrong" colors. nowadays, it seems like anything goes at Rush: jeans, tees, uncombed hair, babies, you name it oh of course, topped off w/the "wrong" colors
crazy, i tell ya...
