That's the thing that jumps out at me. If I'm say.. a 50 year old creepy looking guy and I take pictures of a 15 year old girl which look like this, I'm probably going to the pokey for producing child pornography.

How come that isn't on the table?

Perhaps I'm off on what a "child" is under the law?

She did do a Lifetime Movie about a year or two ago concerning a high school desegregating its prom.

As far as Jodie and Brooke was concerned, keep in mind that there not really harsher laws back in the 1970s as there are now concerning a kid depicting a sexual scene.

There's no way you can compare a masterpiece like Taxi Driver to some pictures in Vanity Fair, myspace, whatever. It's apples and oranges.

Here is my question...in 10 years...heck in even 5 years...which do you think she will be remembered more for....?

A successful TV show which culminated in a nationwide tour or some pics in a magazine?

My money is on the show...

In fact, I'll go so far as to say that your opinion actually agrees with the main point: sexualizing adolescents (especially girls) has been a part of culture (and legitimate art) for centuries, and this example is just another silly data point. You're agreeing with this premise implicitly in this post - which I think is good, because I think it's borderline self-evident, and it should give a lot more context to why this should not be the shit circus it has become.

No, I'm disagreeing because he's saying Jodie Foster playing a character that caused controversy because she was young & sexy (and played it to perfection, which was another thing that raised eyebrows - how damn good she was in it) is the same as Miley Cyrus being herself in pictures that caused controversy because she's young & sexy.

Now if Miley was in a movie and playing a teen who has sex for the first time complete with graphic scenes, that would be a better comparison.

I never said I thought the pics were horrible or anything, just that for her managers/parents to blame Vanity Fair & AL on anything is ridiculous when they had to sign off on it. Backpedaling.

 Probably.
On that note, child actors have always played teenage-young adult roles well beyond their years. Raven's facial age won't give her away for a couple more years but her body type might make her obviously older in a couple more years.

Slow down there..I never brought up that she played it to perfection...but yes...the point I was trying to raise is that very young actors and actresses have have done some very controversial things in the course of their careers very early on and suffered no real ill effects from it.

Heck, compared to what I have seen on TV today, I don't think Foster's performance wasn't that big of a deal...BUT considerign the time period and the graphic violence of the scene she was involved in at the end of the movie, I can see how in the 70s is was a big deal.

They may vaguely remember she existed because the industry has been saturated with her. I don't see her singing or acting talents as anything worth remembering.

Oh, ok, I got cha now. We're good I thought you were saying Miley & Jodie were on the same level of skills (really not so much).

The difference is in the way they're handling it. Miley's already raised some eyebrows putting pics on myspace, now this? And then blaming it on the magazine? Jodie on the other hand, was very clear that "this was only a movie" and followed it up with something Disney, I believe. She never tried to "disown" being in the movie.

I didn't know that she counted as a child "star." Oh well. She's had a lot of roles but has been pretty much under the radar as far as the celebrity news is concerned.

While we're at it, Keenen and Kel and quite a few uncelebrated child stars have done pretty well for themselves.

^^^I think Julia Stiles started out in NY on stage and in commercials, etc., as a kid before getting into movies as an older teen (but still a teen).

And don't forget Helen Hunt -- anyone remember the after school special where she was QB on the football team?

ok almost all of the stars that we see now started when they were young. including Forest Whitaker's funny looking self on Fast Times at Ridgemont High. woohoo!!! But he might've been like 20, as are many stars who play high school students.
