The fact that you PROFILED Kanye West because he's a hip hop artist says a lot. Don't try to go back and ask for information as to who he is.
As much as I like Bill O'Reilly for SOME things...I'm gonna have to tell you like Ludacris told good ol' Bill:
"Blow it out your ass."

IMO, those who are going (those without a choice) will go, those who are not won't.
Re the title of this thread: Who said that Kanye pledged anything? The man and his writers are throwing out lyrics/rhymes. Who says it's true? It could be someone else's "story".
If he pledged and "depledged" COOL. If he didn't COOL.

I feel ya, sisterfriend!!!
Okay...this is funny, to me. How about youth saw Bill Gates and thought "wow...a college drop-out is a billionaire...to hell with school."
Many rock stars for years have been anti-establishment, speaking out against school, and some have even promoted self-destructive and suicidal behaviors.
So, people need to give me a break in targeting hip hop artists for every damn thing. They aren't without fault, but let's talk about the artists in other genres who aren't serving as the best examples.
Yeah...Kanye is the "College Dropout," but people who have ANY type of guidance in their lives beyond music will be able to choose their paths accordingly.
Topic: I don't think Kanye dropped line or anything. His talking about BGLOs just means that BGLOs are very present on college campuses and in the black community. Unfortunately, we're only represented as being steppers, but I never heard his lyrics and felt like he was taking a jab at BGLOs or anything of the sort.

Anyway,
Regarding Kanye and the whole greek thing. I want to know WHY he mentions greek life so much in music (on his CD and the Dilated Peoples song). Is he really jocking that part of college life, or did he know that if he mentions greeks he would have an instant audience? I heard people are using School Spirit for yard shows and what not (although, I question the gansta and pimp part of the hook).

He or his writers probably wrote alot of this after the "Drumline" hype.
Do we know that he attended a university? If so, which one? Maybe that can answer some of the mystery. I'm sure if he tried to come through XYZ fraternity, someone (out there even the WWW) would come out of the woodworks saying..." Yeah, Kanye this or Kanye that..."
I bet in the Fall you will see many greeks using his music in their shows, marching bands will play his music. Bascially, it's an untouched market. Kudos to the marketing team. Shucks, look at the discussion taking place on GC. I'm sure this discussion isn't limited on the internet @ GC either.

My Sorors have already used the "she's a Delta, so she's been throwin' that Dynasty Sign" as an intro for a couple of stepshows and yardshows.
You're right, though:
College-life and BGLOs sell records and brings attention to the artist (i.e. Jay-Z having the Alphas stepping in "99 problems"). Kanye's writing about what he's seen. I can understand the curiosity of some of the posters in this thread, but I don't think this is a Matlock Mystery.

LOL @ Matlock Mystery.
I guess this same discussion would have taken place in the 90s with Chubb Rock and the Omegas, ole boy's "Just a Friend" video with the Kappas...Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" and the Alphas etc. etc.
Oh well. At least we can have a civil discussion.

Hot Dog Dinky (Chubb Rock's dancer/friend/whatever else he was) is an ol skool Omega who used to throw the hooks up in videos (i.e., the "Just the Two of Us" video with the Bruhs and Kappas stepping).
Everyone KNEW Biz Markie's ass didn't go to college and wasn't a Kappa...LOL. But, his having the Kappas in the video just created the "college setting."
LOL...I heard the Alphas were mad at Vanilla Ice when "Ice Ice Baby" first came out. They didn't wonder if he dropped line or depledged, though. LOL
Yeah..."civil" discussion's are "fun."

Sisterfriend, EVERY HBCU band remixed that song...LOL
I was almost tired of the Drumline craze. But, I'm glad Drumline was successful in bringing attention BACK to HBCU bands.
(The worst was Shaw U. and St. Augustine College's homecoming. Their bands tried hard, but, uh.......maybe next time )

I never realized there was a Drumline "craze", but I remember going on a DCI forum when the movie came out, and read as every band dork came out of the woodwork to bash that movie.
Nevertheless, my cousin marches for SCV so he got me a copy. As a former band dork, I enjoyed it very much.
ETA: I live in San Diego. We get the Gold COast Classic out here, but there's no HBCU's out here.

Why can't my school band get some ideas like that? I know we're an ag school in the middle of some fields, but "Call Tyrone" would be excellent at the half time show. Especially since (as I mentioned earlier) we have male members in skirts/kilts and capes. Or RuPaul 'Work, turn tot he left, work, turn tot he right, Sasahy Shante!" Oh the attitude!!!
I think N2Deep "Back to the Hotel" would be an interesting remix for a band, especially with the honking horn. Or perhaps Slick Rick's "Children's Story". Add in some BBD "Poison", and Digital Underground Call it the 1988 remix or something...I need to return to the year 2004 now thanks.
Speaking of Kanye, why do people NOT KNOW that is Chaka Khan's song in the background? I think that is a bigger issue than if Kanye Depledged or not. Not knowing who Chaka Khan is, is unacceptable!!!

Most artist (from spoken word to Folk to Hip Hop) create/write based on their life experiences. That's why Grandmaster Flash's Melle Mel's lyrics on "the Message" was so powerful(sp?).
If 50, Jadakiss, Jigga and a million other mc's can reference their former crack/cocaine sells in a record, and Spoken word artist reference 'bad relationships' and such.... Why wouldn't Kanye reference College life?
