I am curious, too. In an earlier post, you made reference to a chapter at "UC Santa Clara" losing their condo in a wildfire. There is no UC Santa Clara. There is a UC Santa Cruz, and there is a Santa Clara University. Did you mean one of those two schools?

Well, rats. All I wanted to know was if y'all had seen an increase in PNMs turning down bids.

I have not seen an increase in the refusal of bids at the school where I advise. There are always a handful of girls that may go to bid day or give it a week before dropping out. It's a relatively small school with only approximately 100 girls signing up for recruitment and usually only 70-80 making it to pref night. We had a really rough recruitment panhellenic wise this past year with a lot of girls dropping out or not showing up for recruitment but I believe only 2 of the 70 or so that received bids turned them down and of those two they both at least went to bid day and attempted to give it a shot.

Aw carnation, c'mon. I smelled the popcorn coming from your kitchen, and I even chilled us a couple of cokes. I'll move over on this bench and make room for you if you'd like. I'm that kinda nice, doncha know?
seriously, regarding the original topic: I haven't seen it at the UofA (that's not Alabama, and that's not how Alabama is referred to anyway, correct?). What appears to be happening is that PNMs are dropping out of recruitment entirely if they don't get their desired chapters on their invite list. I only know of one PNM who didn't get her first choice; she went ahead with accepting the bid from her second choice, went through initiation, and then - regrettably - resigned.

I'm rushing at UK in a month and my friend there advised me to keep an open mind because, lately, a lot of girls have been going through with the mindset that it's "XYZ or I'm not joining." So, I know it's happening there at least. I think I'll take whatever bid I get and be happy--if the group wants you, why wouldn't you give them a chance at least?

Collegians don't necessarily follow policy to the T - Alpha Gam doesn't have senior status but hmm.. there were a number of seniors in my chapter on any given day on "senior status."

Oncegreek sorry about the typo - I meant Santa Clara University in California.
AzTheta - Unfortunately Blondie93 doesn't sound very nice. My information about informal status was given to me by girls wearing letters (one who said she had been on inactive status for three semesters?) so I will just have to assume they were liars wandering around spreading disinformation about GLOs.
As I mentioned before - I have been an advisor for 15 years, and I work on a college campus so I am familiar with several GLOs, and I thought this was a forum to discuss various aspects of Greek life around the country and our different experiences

Just realize that being an adviser for one GLO for any number of years does NOT give you an understanding of the regulations of other NPCs. Also, as an adviser, you should know better than to take the word of an inactive collegiate as accurate. Most of us on GC have advising experience and have been telling you to narrow the focus of your comments to your own organization. Many of these policies do NOT flow across to other groups.

Greekchat is a forum to discuss various aspects of Greek life around the country and our different experiences. It is not a forum to make blanket statements about the inner workings of GLOs that one doesn't belong to, no matter where you received your information.

Really? I only see one qualifier here in the second paragraph. All others appear to be blanket statements for all NPC chapters.

Several NPCs now have policies where you can apply for a semester off of dues if you have an internship or a semester abroad, or a health emergency that requires you to take a semester off. That is not the same as being inactive or terminating.
There is also 5th year status or early alumni status for someone that needs more time to focus on finishing up and graduating or that is transitioning to professional school.
If you get married while in college - you have to apply to remain at collegiate status if you want to remain active as a collegian. It is assumed that you want early alumni status - thereby avoiding the financial obligations of dues or living in house.

And which NPCs are those? You've already been corrected on your erroneous information regarding Theta. What useful, verifiable knowledge do you have about other GLOs? Stating that some groups will help you pay your dues is NOT helpful when you don't indicate which ones do. It gives false hope or in some cases gives people excuses not to pay dues.
Also, acting like a wounded martyr will get you nowhere. Quit acting clueless and admit you overstepped you knowledge base.

It is. But your contributions to the discussions are much more valuable and can be considered in context if (1) people know what group(s) you have first-hand knowledge of, and (2) if you're clear in distinguishing between the things you know first-hand and things you've observed (or think you've observed) in other groups.
I'll go ahead and admit it: I'm curious as to why you seem so hesitant to identify your sorority.

Advisers don't have to be greek members (at least for AGD). It is preferable that they are, but it's not required. It makes ritual and such easier if said adviser is required to attend a formal meeting for one reason or another.
/going to hide now.

I know. Part of why I'm curious . . . the clear avoidance of answering the question makes me wonder if the answer is really "I'm not."
I completely get not broadcasting personal identifying information on the internet. But I've never understood why someone at GreekChat would keep their Greek affiliation (if any) a secret, especially when asked.

Dear HQWest:
This thread was started about PNMs tossing bids, not about spreading misinformation regarding going inactive/marriage/internships/5th year actives/financial policies/blahblahblahblahblah. You keep making incorrect statements; I'm not letting it slide.
Citing girls in letter sweatshirts as a source of information is bad science. You state you work in a college/university setting which would suggest to me that you have some idea of scientific investigation and reliable, valid data collection methods.
Talking about one's experiences is great, but provide a context/referent. Or don't; and realize that your credibility is being questioned and any contributions you make will be viewed through a filter of doubt and suspicion.
FWIW: Blondie93 is VERY nice. I've met her, face to face. She's from the South, she can't help it. She was being fair and respectful to you in her post; you persisted after that, in spite of her gentle caution. Blondie93 is a real person with a real recruitment story. And real experiences. People pay attention when she posts.
Now, can anyone provide anything about Carnation's question? I did. I talked about what I knew about the UofA. I know there are other UofA posters on GC who may have different experiences. Perhaps we could hear from some midwestern folks? or the SEC people? I'm kinda curious about this "temper tantrum tossing" myself. *shrug*
AlwaysSAI - you don't have to hide. You brought up a valid point! *waves at Mr. Cat, nice to see you, it's been a while!*
