I agree with everyone above! It is so hard to not take these cuts personally on all sides. I even had it from a Rho Chi perspective when one of my PNMs confided in me that she wanted to rank my chapter second on her pref card. She liked them, but she loved the other chapter. She was just afraid that my chapter wanted her more than the other chapter. It was painful to council her to "go with her heart" since that meant that she wouldn't be my sister.

Good luck with recruitment, it seems like you guys have really turned things around and that's always nice to see.
Luckly, my campus isn't a jc so we don't have that problem but I can see how it could cause some major problems.
I'm excited to hear the rest of your story!

This is like Hoosiers, Rudy, "The Little Engine That Could" and all those other wonderful movies and stories that make you want to stand up and cheer for the underdog!

Remember that there is no guarantee that those 4 or 5 women will in fact receive a bid from your chapter. I know you said it will take a lot (essentially doubling your chapter size) to reach quota, but you have 80ish amazing women attending your preference event- if you all knock it out of the park, you could reach quota before those 4/5 women. Despite the confusion about your Panhellenic release numbers, there is NO WAY Panhellenic can tell you how to complete your bid list. Although this is a membership selection matter, so I know your sorority has its own rules on how the bid list is set, if these 4/5 women don’t endear themselves to your chapter any more at preference, talk to you advisor about ensuring they are on the bottom of your bid list. If you reach quota before you get to them, they WON’T receive a bid and you won’t have to worry about them joining your chapter!

I just want to point out that this depends on whether silverpearls' campus has guaranteed placement or not. The campus I advise at does, which means that if a women attends all the pref parties she has on her schedule and doesn't SIP or "suicide", she is guaranteed a bid to one of the chapters she preffed at. In silverpearls' chapter's case, if there are women who are only attending their pref party and their campus has guaranteed placement (and those women don't drop out after pref), then those women would in fact get bids to silverpearls' chapter.
Silverpearls, I'm sure this is all very difficult to digest - the nitty gritty of Recruitment often is. And if you're not a member of your chapter's Recruitment team you may never know exactly the reasoning behind why things are done a certain way. That said, I do agree with above posters that Panhell should not force ANY chapter to take girls they don't want. And while it may be too late this year to do anything about it, I hope you are able to discuss what has happened with a regional or national officer so the same thing doesn't happen next year.
Best of luck to you and your chapter!

The weird thing about this story is that I'm sure there are lots of girls reading from "top chapters", never realizing that the chapter THEY bash and put down on JC could be this chapter.
We all need to remember that the struggling chapter on OUR campus could be just like this one.

Exactly.
Also, alot of girls in other chapters may think "Ugh, XYZ is so small/stupid/whatever. They should just close and then the Greek system will be stronger." I always like to point out that this is NOT the case. If XYZ closes, someone is going to become the "new XYZ." So it is to everyone's benefit to not trashtalk and to be Panhellenic, so everyone can thrive.

To be fair, and I by no means want to start this thread in another tangent (if for no other reason than this is my absolute favorite recruitment thread!), I often think it is not the "top chapters" who bash on the "weak chapter"...in general, I feel like the top chapters do not perceive weaker chapters as a threat and instead go straight for the jugular for the chapters they compete with. I'm only saying this to make a point, but I am from a chapter that is regarded as relatively strong on our campus (I'm a leg, probably only way I got in haha!) and the cattier sisters talk trash about our biggest rival (recruitment and fraternity wise). In the same vein, I often feel that it is other struggling chapters who go after the chapter who is weaker than them not quite realizing that if they run them off campus then they are the new "bottom tier".
Either way it's stupid.
I am so excited for your chapter! I can't wait to see who you guys scoop up!!

Agreed with all of these posts. I'm sick of hearing people say that certain sororities are holding panhel back when in reality once those one's are gone there will be another one to replace it.
Anyways.
Good luck with tonight! I hope everything goes that way you want it to go!!!!
