Of course, I think we all knew what Taualumna meant by "Alpha chapter." Just another example of diversity, even in what seem like the simplest and most obvious things, among GLOs.

Let's clarify this a little... DG was actually founded in 1873 at The Lewis School for Girls in Oxford, Mississippi which was located very close to Ole Miss. The Lewis School for Girls and the DG chapter later became a part of Ole Miss.

I also assumed that we were talking about the original founding chapters of GLO's, whether they have the alpha designation or not.

AST's Alpha Chapter is at my alma mater and had closed at some point but recolonized around the time that I graduated or was an advisor (between '87 and '91). A group of women who were Lambda Chi Crescents decided they wanted to be a sorority and created a local sorority. Then they petitioned PC and AST. Panhellenic Council was excited to bring them back especially since it was an Alpha chapter. They are a strong chapter at Eastern Michigan now.

Dee, it always tickles me that Eastern Michigan U's initials are EMU. It's a big feathery bird! I mean no matter what, that makes me smile. But then again, I went to CUP, so maybe that's why I'm amused

I graduated from Georgetown College and it is was difficult when Greekchat started because Georgetown goes by GC and GC was/is commonly used for Greekchat. Another funny school... Furman University...FU. I find it funny because it is a christian oriented school and FU just doesn't go with the image.

The Alpha Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma has been in continous existence at Longwood since our founding in 1898!

SDT's Alpha is active at Cornell. I am not sure if it has been continuously active.

Phi Sigma Kappa was founded at Massachussetts Agricultural College (now University of Massachussetts-Amherst) on March 15, 1873 and is active. It may have been inactive in the past though, I'm not sure.

Sigma Chi's Alpha Chapter, originally founded in 1855 at Miami University in Ohio, is still running strong today.

Funny you should mention that. Furman's mascot is now the Palladin, but I heard they used to be called the Christian Knights. Well, if you put all that together: Furman University Christian Knights, it can get kind of embarrassing for a Christian university (using the initials only)! Guess that's why they changed the name of the mascot!!! (I hope someone wasn't pulling my leg--I can be really gullible sometimes!)

Speaking as a current student, Furman University has never been the Christian Knights, it is a popular rumor around campus though for the freshman.
Football games are fun - our favorite cheer is "FU one time, FU two times, FU all the way."

Phi Delta Theta's Alpha (founding) chapter is still alive and well at Miami (OH) University. They have been there since December 26th 1848....does anyone know if their alpha chapter is older than ours?
