The "Macon Magnolia" portion of honeychile's signature is there because her organization was founded at Wesleyan in Macon. Phi Mu and ADPi were both founded there, and lots of GCers from those orgs have the "proud to be a Macon Magnolia" note in their sigs due to that.

Two comments:
1. Kerry got more votes than any presidential candidate in history..except for George Bush. 50,000 voters changed their minds in Ohio and HE'D be president.

2. I know our (Inter) National (one of the oldest in the country) sells glassware at convention that is clearly meant for alcohol. We do not support the "dry house" concept, but believe that a brother is an adult and should be responsible. If you are doing something you'd be embarassed to have associated with Alpha Delt, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT! As a brother, you should intervene if another brother is. We've all taken oaths to do so.
OK, I'm done!

I could drink in my letters, I am legal, but I choose not to because I don't want anyone to stereotype me or my sisters. People think what they want regardless, so why encourage it?

I agree that I dont really think it matters that much because people will form there own opinions about you before they even know you, or know that you are in Greek life. I dont think its a good idea to go out every night wearing your letters and getting trashed, but I also dont think it is a big deal if your are 21 or older and are having a few drinks at the bar and wearing your letters. Odds are, the people that already know you, know how you are and what you do on the weekends. So I think that if you are that worried about it, then you probably shouldnt be wearing them out in bars and stuff, but if you know how you handle yourself, then you'll be fine. I understand the importance of Greek letters, but I also dont think people will judge the sororities and frats on that alone.

There have been several threads on the issue of whether Greeks should wear letters while drinking, or whether letters should be on glasses that have an alcohol cannotation: You can have letters on a water bottle but not Champagne Flutes.

It seems almost universal that everyone agreed that drinking while in letters was bad.

After reading the threads I have some philosophical problems that I was hoping y'all could help me solve. ITs caused me some cognitive dissonance as I find that the reality is not meeting the image.

1. We know that drinking is not unethical, and not "bad" so why is not approproate to drink while in letters? Did drinking become "dirty" (like having sex with a close cousin) when I wasn't looking?

2. So since drinking is not unethical or "bad" then it wouldn't be against our core values, correct? Therefore doing a perfectly acceptable activity doesn't represent our organizations badly?

3. And what about mixers? There is an event we go to only because we are Greek and only because we belong to a specific organization. Its a fundamental expression of ourselves as social organizations. Shouldn't we wear letters there? We do make party shirts . . .

4. Or, are we so concerned about the drinking-in-letters issue because we want to falsely advertise ourselves? To do actions and then claim that we don't do them? Isn't that a funamental hypocrisy?

(edited to add)

So help a brother out and explain this stuff to me . . .. .
Considering that most people in college aren't legally allowed to drink, I think you have a bigger problem on your hands...the law.

Just because it seems the long arm of justice is ignoring something illegal doesn't it mean it isn't wrong.

http://www.madd.org/under21/4847

The United States did not implement a drinking age just because "The Man" wants to keep white middle class kids under his thumb.

However, I'd expect you to adopt a different attitude when reality comes crashing into your idiotic, utterly meaningless fairy tale lives of drinking to an excess and having sex with people you don't care about when you wake up with VD in a pool of your own urine and vomit and wonder what you've done with your life. Real adults don't drink like they're suicidally depressed. Maybe colleges will begin to offer courses on not being stupid.
