DO NOT WEAR HOSE WITH ANYTHING OPEN TOED!!!

Sorry to yell, but it's nasty. And the toeless hose? Duh, your legs are a different color than your feet, isn't that weird? Never ever wear hose with sandals. Never. It doesn't matter how special your shoes are. If it's too cold, then wear closed toed shoes! If you live in Florida, then wear those sandals, but for God sakes! No hose.

Ok, enough....I'm exhausted from that.
But, for the nude hose? I'm with ya Cream, I'm so light they match me...so with suits? I always pretty much wear them, unless another color looks better.

and yeah...I hate wearing white, but for ritual I have to IT KILLS ME TO watch these younger women with their whites. It's not a strip club, be respectful. It's ritual.

Some of the "white" outfits girls wear ... and I'm including the stuff girls I knew wore when we were active ... were not always, um, tasteful. Initiation, ritual, whatever it is, it is not the place to dress like naughty nurse or in a skin-tight tube dress!

We're not even allowed into the ritual room unless our dress is appropriate. That means all dresses must be, at least, knee-length. No cleavage. Also, if your dress is spaghetti strapped, then you have to wear a cardigan over it...and make sure it's white!

ritual dress

Our chapter had very conservative guidelines for ritual dress, mainly because most of us equated it with church and we had pretty much all been brought up that you dress conservatively for church. So I about died at the last initiation I went to (not at my chapter) and saw some of the things girls were wearing. Please ladies, fingertip length (PREFERABLY knee length) skirts, SLIPS, not skin tight, and no spaghetti straps!! Here's a news flash, the hot man you are scoping is not going to pop up out of a cake in the middle of the ceremony. Invest in a nice white dress or suit, that is sophisticated and doesn't make you feel dowdy and you won't mind it. I still say, if there was an online resource for nice all-white dress they would make a mint!

Oh, and by the way....KHAKIS AND BLACK PARTY PANTS ARE NOT ARE NOT ARE NOT PIN ATTIRE!!

ok, I feel better now.

Can you explain this to my chapter? I particularly like the knee high bar boots with pin attire...not. hehe.

As someone who just started their pre-student teaching experience (my school is kinda odd) I realized two things

1) My closet needs a major update. Most of the clothing it while perfect for a college student, is not at all appropriate to actually go to school (and elementary school) in.

2) Many of the items that I would wear to teach in (for instance I would wear a 'seasonal sweater' if I were teaching grade 3 or below) I would not actually wear in 'real life'. Dealing with the age group I'm in (currently 4th grade) and hormones and so-forth I've discovered that it's safest to wear floor-length skirts, fairly lose tops with a highish neckline, dress pants that fit more losely than I am accustomed to.

Now, I by no means dress like a skank, but when you're teaching you have to be especially careful what you wear. Some of my favorite and cutest tops can't be worn to teach in because they're a little too tight at the chest, or there's a hint of skin near my cleavage. It's such a conflict because this is not how I would normally dress, but I love to teach and in certain school districts there are certain things that are not acceptable. While in the future I may have more of a choice about this, for now all I can do is grin, bear it, and change into more 'me' clothes as soon as I get home . . . yea, and put my tounge ring back in too.

As a side note, with wearing so many floor lenth skirts lately I have definitely decied that knee-highs are my best friend. I'm not allowed to go without pantyhose and they are definitely so much more comfortable!

Are you allowed to wear pants to ritual?

Also, I want to give a big "AMEN" to the person who was bothered by 11-year-olds dressing like grown women! Whatever happened to dressing appropriately for your age? If I'd gone out dressing like that, my mom would have administered a smackdown!

Well, they were at my school! I think it depends where you go. If we told girls that khakis weren't pin attire, the sororities would have lost half their members immediately.

where to start...when to end??

Quadraboob - LMAO - that is hilarious and SO true! I am (and have been since 12) big chested -- so I have always known what is appropriate and not appropriate to wear...why can't other women figure this out? Are they REALLY using Erin Brockovich as a role model here?

Lacy bras and tight shirts -- UGH UGH UGH -- Wal-Mart has a fabulous line of plain satin bras that cost about $9 each. Not the flashy Victoria Secret kind, but it works.

BIG NO-NO -- our national visitor actually did this at preference one year...our dress for preference is long (tea length or to the ankle) black, plain dress. Nothing flashy, nothing spag straps, etc. Black hose with black CLOSED TOE shoes. No jewelry except a diamond engagement ring for those lucky enough to have one, and small simple pearl earrings, other than our badge of course. Well here is our visitor in a black spandex dress -- white bra, no hose and sandals. And she was TOTALLY Casper - so it was hideous. We were all embarrassed and even commented to nationals that visitors should dress appropriately for all ceremonies (and yes we consider our pref a ceremony).

Nude hose -- look cheap regardless. I don't care if they are made by Wal-Mart or DKNY - they look cheap. Suntan...don't even go there. I do love champagne, creamier shades for lighter suits, etc.

Open toe shoes...if you have the body to wear them -- and you better be looking mighty fine -- then they should be worn with sandalfoot hose so we don't have the tacky line to look at. (I'm talking about your "dress" shoes with the open toe -- not sandals in any way, shape, or form -- I don't like open toe shoes (as in one or two toes showing) because they look cheap and totally 80's.

Sandals or thong sandals -- NO HOSE. Gross.

Panty lines -- been here before -- if you wear a thong, then I don't want to see it!! Not through your too-tight clothes, and DEFINITELY not when you stand up in CHURCH in front of me, and you're wearing your fuguly hip hugging pants with your little spandex shirt (we are talking about the house of the Lord here!) and your fuschia pink thong is looking at me the whole time. Okay people...little lesson here -- the thong is going to come up high in the back -- just like other underwear. Why you think when you put it on that it will be invisible is beyond me...you just need to go back to your trailer park and re-think your life if that is what you call appropriate.

(Disclaimer - trailer park refers to what we in the South call "Trailer Park Trash" -- we in the South can use it because we have these tacky trailer parks every 30 seconds down the highway and *most* of the people that come out of them in their *fine* accessories -- usually consisting of a belt buckle bigger than my SUV tires for the men, or the lovely WHITE, Pic-n-pay brand open toe shoes that are 2 sizes too small, but you couldn't resist for the price, with your black hose with the run down the side that you don't think anyone will notice -- will just make you really wonder how the species could continue to procreate. Now, this isn't the same as the folks who have a nice trailer (nice being that the shutters aren't laying on the ground, the siding is semi-intact, and you ain't got 3 dogs tied up to the trailer hitch) and live in a trailer community.)

As for the white shoes...if you wear them, make them a nice quality. If you must wear them...

For whomever asked about the no-white rule between Labor Day and Easter (sorry, Yankees - its Easter not Memorial Day) -- it applies to white (stark white) pants, skirts, and shoes - not blouses. And as to "why" -- the answer is "Just because" -- just like momma will tell you

LOL AXO Alum - great post!

BTW, thank you for posting that song line as your signature. I was sitting in class about an hour ago totally unable to remember the word "unpredictable." Was driving me INSANE. You just saved me a small piece of sanity without even knowing it

AXO Alum, I don't know if the DKNY thing was b/c of my earlier post or you were making a point between expensive and cheap...

Anyway, the flesh toned hose from DKNY are not nude hose they are a line of hose designed to actually match skin tones (which I think is OK as long as they are a good match), although they still don't have anything that perfectly matches me, so I don't own any of them

Nope - the DKNY thing was just off the top of my head -- not intended for you at all - sorry for any misunderstanding

All I was trying to say was that nude hose -- not flesh tone -- in general look totally cheap -- regardless if they are $1 or $100 per pair. Something about how they reflect against unmatched skin tones!

juniorgrrl - glad I could help

I'm a Casper white girl, and I am still going to wear nude hose and open toe shoes if I want.

LOL @ quadraboob

Hose - I suspect they are a medieval torture device invented by men, who, naturally, don't have to wear them since they came up with the idea. You go out and buy a nice pair of hose for, say, $10. You squeeze into them. The crotch ends up somewhere around mid-thigh, and by the time you get it seated correctly, you've developed a deep empathy for your toothpaste tube - especially if you're wearing control top. You can't sit down and breathe at the same time. Heaven help you if you want to dance. And to top it all off, next time you want to wear the same hose, you discover a huge run, so you have to throw out your hose and go spend another $10 on new hose that, again, only last for one wearing. UGH.

I tend to wear pants or a long skirt most of the time, so if I'm wearing shoes that call for hose, I wear trouser socks. Sooo much more comfortable, and if one does run, you can pair the other one up with one from a different pair of the same design.

Sandals with socks - UGH. The only excuse for that is if they're new sandals that you're breaking in, and if that's the case, do it in the privacy of your own home.

Anything that shows your belly, other than a bikini - UGH. I actually have to change the channel or leave the room when they show that stupid ad for the low-cut jeans.

Belt, shoes, and purse not matching - UGH. Pick a color, for heaven's sake.

11-year-olds dressing like grown women who are going clubbing - UGH. Act and dress your age. I had a classmate in middle school who wore tons of blue eyeshadow (I think she put it on with a paint roller), bright red lipstick, mascara, used so much hairspray that she could have been solely responsible for the ozone hole, etc - and she was 12. Another classmate in high school wore a see-through blouse to school. (She was sent home.)

As for wearing all white, the rule around here is that it's OK between Memorial Day (not Easter) and Labor Day - other than that, you should have a good reason (ritual, bride, etc) but you won't be driven out of town if you don't. Individual items (e.g. white blouse with black pants) are fine.

OK, rant over
