Unofficial Dresscodes

This one is mainly for the ladies, but I'm sure some of the men will have something to add :D

I went to school in the south and our chapter had some pretty strict standards, some of which are below...

The traditional no white clothes or shoes after Labor Day or Before Easter.
No open toed shoes after Labor Day or Before Easter
No Nude hose

I remember one rushee & legacy came in to a party breaking all of these rules. I thought one of my sisters was going to have a heart attack ;)

I grew up in the Midwest and am still horrified by those that wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. I hate white shoes under any circumstances and as far as open toe shoes go, well, I"m in Florida and wear sandals about 10 months out of the year now, except for dress. I think dress sandals are silly. http://www.plaudersmilies.de/tiere/pengy.gif

OK, white shoes, I know that one. But no nude hose? You can't wear black hose with everything. Please tell me that no one still thinks this is the 80s and wears hose that matches their dress!

bucutie02 03-13-2002 12:50 PM

I hate nude colored hose more than anything else!!!! I am not really sure why, but omg, i hate them!!!

Even when i was in dance, we had to wear a certain colored leotard with certain colored tights during the week. Well i hated it when we had to wear "flesh" colored tights. I loved wearing black ones. Oh and when you would stand up it was as if they tights would grab on the your legs sooo tight and it actually burned the back of your thighs!! those were not fun memories..... but my hatred for nude colored hoses started off way before dance!

Why cant you wear white after labor day?!?! Have you guys seen that commercial for like Office Max or something that shows two ladies walking down the sidewalk and all of a sudden another lady wearing all white walks past them and they are like "Oh no! Dont tell she is wearing white after Labor Day!!  "

Its pretty funny, but i still dont know why that is! I wear white capris all the time, are you guys talking about wearing all white?!?! That is pretty tacky if you ask me, but i also know that most of you wear all white for initiation which completely different, but wearing all white by choice is not my thing!

And i love sandals, they are sooo super cute! I have tons of them!!!!

I hate them too! lol

As for no nude hose, this is basically b/c some women have problems with matching their skin tone. There is nothing worse than someone wearing suntan colored hose when they are super pale.

Color suggestions:
black
navy
cream
champagne (one of my favorite)
brown (if it will work with the outfit)

if you want to wear white in the "off" seasons i guess you'd say ;) wear what they call "winter white" or an off white color.

as for nude hose - if you can match it to your kin tone - wear it, nothing bothers me more than someone wearing too much of one damn color or odd hose colors, like purple? who wears purple hose? you don't do that - if your outfit is not a standard color, you go with nude, as long as it shows up nude and not "suntan" color - that bothers me too... lol

What's wrong with nude hose? I am so pale that even nude hose makes my legs look tan. If I wear a strapless or short sleeved dress or top, any colored hose makes my legs and arms not match and it looks weird. I just can't help it. :(

My pet peeve fashion wise is when women wear spaghetti straps and you can see their bra straps underneath. I can't stand all these belly shirts that I see everywhere. The belly is not meant to be seen by the world except on a beach. :p

StarLightGirl 03-13-2002 01:34 PM

Spaghetti straps with bra straps showing??? People still do that??

I feel ya Cream, but I think it all depends on the "belly" itself. Now if you (not you Cream, just speaking generally), have a huge belly with rolls and stretch marks coming down on all sides and hair running from your navel down to you know where, I see where that may be a little tacky

Other pet peeves:

Socks with sandals
"psychodelic" (sp?) panty hose

I'll think of more :)
Have a great day everyone! :)

I recently bought a "winter white" dress suite-it is THE most beautiful item in my closet. Actually, winter white tends to the cream side. Stark white is another story.

As far as open toe dress sandals...
At our last ccocktail party I noticed quite a mix. Some ladies wore hose, others didn't. It seems almost contradictory to be in formal attire with escort in a tux and the lady NOT wearing hose. But SOMETIMES the best look with a particular dress is a strappy dress sandal. Oh, what's a girl to DOOOO!

AOIIBrandi 03-13-2002 02:01 PM

Cream, DKNY makes some really great skin toned sheers in multiple shades. They are kinda expensive, but I think they're worth it :D

Also, I should clarify on the white. I meant stark white, winter white and cream are fine anytime of year.

Pink&Blue 03-13-2002 02:20 PM

I grew up and still live in warm weather climate and we've never had anything against wearing white or open toed shoes all year long. When it rarely drops below 60 degrees--your wardrobe doesn't change a whole lot from season to season.

FuzzieAlum 03-13-2002 03:00 PM

It totally depends on where you live. The "no white shoes after Labor Day" rule is followed most strictly in the South. And here in Seattle, wearing colored (not nude or black) hose, even suntan hose, will get you snickers. (Cause you're trying too hard, and in Seattle, if you can't wear it with fleece, don't wear it at all! You shouldn't even be dressed up in hose anyway!)

I always wonder if women are "supposed to" wear hose with open-toed shoes? Some of my sisters say, "Oh, it's so tacky to wear any dress without hose," but I think seeing hose around the toes and covering the pedicure looks hideous.

My pet peeve: Women who wear white/cream hose in the winter when they are not even wearing a white or light outfit! Like white hose with a black skirt and shoes. Pastel hosiery makes legs look fatter, and it totally breaks up the line of the leg.

I think it's funny how rules change depending on geography. What's tacky somewhere is normal elsewhere, and what is classy in one place is tacky elsewhere. But - please, no panty lines, I don't care where you live!

I'm with you, Cream! Nude is the ONLY choice I have because I'm so pale. I wouldn't know what to do if I needed to be dressed up and they didn't exist.

The commercial mentioned before is for Office Max, and if you notice, the lady wearing white is "Kathy Ireland, Fashion expert."

juniorgrrl 03-13-2002 03:59 PM

The thing that gets me is open toed shoes and hose. Its just silly looking.

I don't like much white after labor-day/pre easter at all. For very casual things, maybe, but nothing dressy. Never white shoes, unless you're a baby or a bride.
