Yup Yup, since Viacom bought out BET circa 02 you could see the change in programming they started to put on. The documentary "Hip Hop: beyond Beats and rhymes" exlplained it further...no surprise "BET Uncut" came about that time, and "Teen Summit" went out the window. It is also not a surprise that they are airing reruns of Girlfriends, The Parkers, etc. all shows who belonged to a VIACOM owned channel.

July 13th, 2007 | Author: Aliya EwingHipHopDX has heard exclusively from an insider very close to Charlie Murphy, that due to the uproar over the negative depiction of Black people, his new show "Hot Ghetto Mess" lost the majority of its sponsors and will be pulled from BET's lineup. "He's really messed up over it," our source tells us, "this backlash (after the Don Imus incident) is outta control."

"Hot Ghetto Mess" combines viewer-submitted home videos and "man-on-the-street" style interviews that BET claims are intended to challenge and inspire viewers "to improve themselves and their communities."
"Is my goal to discuss these issues in a format and context that makes people who don't watch the channel comfortable or do it in a way that engages the 18- to 34-year-old viewer and makes them really think about these things?" Reginald Hudlin, BET entertainment president, told the Hollywood Reporter.

Critics of the show have slammed the idea of HGM saying that it exploits the Black community, and that there are much more constructive ways to attempt to "improve their communities" than to showcase ignorance and stupidity. Numerous online petitions have sprouted up in an attempt to halt the show's release.

Earlier this week BET confirmed that some sponsors asked to be removed from the show but declined to specify the companies involved.
Our source recognizes that while some of the content on BET (and "Hot Ghetto Mess" for that matter) is not a "positive" influence for society; he whole-heartedly believes in everyone's right to free speech. "It's not about taking shows like this off of the air," he says, "It's about finding a balance." Our source then went on to say, "BET had a great balance in the beginning; so no one complained…they just need to get back to that... (but) if you don't like it, then don't watch it....but it shouldn't be taken off of the air just because some people don't want to see

Blah Blah Blah, Reg. I think BET needs to be included on the Hot Ghetto Mess website. It's best to examine yourself before you begin looking at others and telling them how to get their sh*t together...

What on earth is he talking about "...erroneous presumption based on absolutely zero information." Folks clearly know and dislike the sentiments behind the website that inspired the show. They have confirmed that the premise of the show is keeping in line with the original website. Furthermore, the name of the show alone says it all. It isn't called "Black Fashions and Behaviors: An Introspective Look". It's called Hot Ghetto Mess. That's waaaay more than zero information.

I am so disappointed to hear this lame response from Reginald Hudlin. He summed it up for me when he made reference to the show appealing to BET's young audience. In essence he is implying that this is what the young audience wants to see so that is what they are going to air.

I also disagree with his statement that the series will promote dialogue and self-examination in an effort to strenghten the black community. That is bull! What vehicles for communication will BET offer after the show has aired?? It's not like they will be holding any townhall meetings to discuss the images and delve deeper into why people look and/or behave the way they do. I bet there will be little to no follow up on behalf of BET with regards to the images they will display on that show.

a. everyone over the age of 25 knows that young people dont want the right things. i will admit that at 19 or 20 i wanted a whole lot of things that were bad for me.
b. theres nothing wrong with making fun of fashion, etc. i watch it all the time on E! but there is never any derogatory remark made about it. it is always just a fashion mistake. it isnt racial either.
