i don't think being being asian american really has anything to do with it. people are friends who they are friends with. cliques form and what not. you go where you're comfortable with.

wow, so you really don't identify with your own culture?

interesting.

That's HK pop culture. Liking dim sum, having the bride change three times at a wedding, celebrating Chinese New Year, etc is still part of being a banana.

I'm a third generation Russian Jewish-American and I LOVE my bubble tea... which is in sad short supply over here!

Is there bubble tea in DC? (another reason to move to LA or NYC)

Racism doesn't fit into my fraternity. My chapter (Iota Zeta) has brothers of all races. Also, the chapter where I'm finishing up (Theta Xi) has all diferent colors of guys. Now that I think of it, so has every chapter that I've ever met. Actully, it violates our creed to be racist. If a pledge said something racist, he would black balled.

those things really don't always comprimise a banana. a banana is someone who gave up all of the nuances of their own culture...in order to assimilate and lose their cultural identity.

Just had to say... I have at least 3 places to get bubble tea on my street alone.... I rather enjoy it... but only certain flavors.

I'm sure there are some sisters out there who have certain prejudices..but my chapter I feel to be very accepting, and I've never been made to feel uncomfortabe because of comments from my sisters...

Assimulating doesn't necessarily mean giving up your culture entirely. "Bananas" are assimulated into Canadian culture, but still enjoy their dim sum (though they probably won't eat chicken feet.....ewwwwww)

dim sum doesn't compromise chinese culture either. that's like saying i'm a "good" filipino because i like adobo. but hey, i guess it's who you want to identify with.

I used dim sum as an example. In any case, there isn't one Chinese culture. There are many Chinese cultures, just like there are many American cultures (you can't say that Texans are the same as New Yorkers, for example). Hong Kong Chinese are going to be more westernized than mainland or Taiwanese Chinese, for example. CBCs or ABCs who live in mixed neighbourhoods will probably act one way, while those who live in Asian neighbourhoods another. Those who are in white neighbourhoods will probably be closer to the former than the latter.

you can't sit and say an entire groups acts one way or this or that or the other. really, it's incorrect. if you don't identify with people who go through the same trials and tribulations that you do, then i guess thats you're MO.

First of all:

Secondly: I'm not sure if every CBC goes through the same things I go through. Some have parents who are very "old country". Others do not. The list goes on and on.
