Racist and/or Anti-semitic brothers/sisters

I never had any brothers that I knew that were like this.

Did anyone else have any ignorant brothers or sisters like this? I have heard of a fellow or two on Greekchat.com even.

Who are they and how have you dealt with them? They do reflect upon your fraternity/sorority and your letters.

Unfortunately yes...

Sometimes a character flaw, no matter how twisted, can be hidden pretty deep...

Some "ex-Brother's" attitudes became apparent over the year, and finally culminated with them being called on it... their reaction, by resorting to racial slurs and worse led to the expulsion of said people.

Question: Would you call someone from a small town who may never have met people from group X racist? Or, would you call that person "underexposed"? I know a girl who said that she has "only met two Jews". I don't think I'd call her anti-semetic by saying that. She just doesn't come from a town with lots of Jewish people. An administrative assistant at my graduate program said that I should wear red if I marry, rather than white (we were talking about weddings). That's because red is the traditional colour for celebration in China. What she doesn't realize is that it is Chinese brides today tend to wear a western style gown to the ceremony. And this goes in China (at least in major cities) too. That woman is just "underexposed". I wouldn't call her racist.

Uhm no neither of those comments are racist or anti-semitic. The first is not even ignorant - it's the truth. She's only met 2. There is nothing wrong with this. And the second might be ignorant but hateful and racist it sounds not.

The best comment from one of my Brothers: "I dont understand why asians are always going places is small groups" as we drove past a few groups of international students walking from campus to the University Village housing area. The funny part is that he's a Vietnamese-American.

It seems that in our chapter the majority of comments that could be taken as bordering racist are actually built off of their level of interaction with a certain racial/ethnic group. One guy didnt want to try making recruitment calls to guys from a particular part of the US because "I think they'd rather join an LGLO". Turns out he hasnt had much interaction with Puerto Ricans, so he and I talked about that.

Oh of course. Around this area it's kind of expected. *shrugs*

Maybe not in your chapter, but you do. We all do. Its not possible to have a GLO with tens of thousands of members without some who are bigoted.

I dealt with it as an undergraduate by admonishing those who made bigoted statements. I caught flack on occasion, but we moved forward.

Perhaps, but my statement was about brothers that I knew.

.

Maybe he "doesn't understand" because he is Asian-American, and he meant Asian "FOBs" (immigrants)? Just a thought.

ETA: Sometimes those born here don't quite understand immigrants who are their age.

Due to the fact that I will be accused of pulling the "race-card" and possibly make people mad by true comments, I will not make any comment concerning the topic of this thread in this thread.

I think we're all very relieved to hear that from him. ;)

There is even a moderator who harasses people on Greekchat that has posted remarks that are both racist and anti-semitic.

However, in this case several of his brothers as well as moderators in other fraternities and sororities have told him it was unacceptable.
