Hee, that's what I always thought. I never knew Alpha Phi Omega was the initials for other words til I got initiated.

In the past, people have apparently thought my letters had something to do with Arizona.
AZ = DZ?

Kind of the same thing--
If I am not mistaken Kappa Delta has something with A O T that means something to them and it looks enough like AOII that I have had KD's come up to me when I have a shirt with AOII on it and go "ohhhh--AOII--I thought it said something else!" I've also done the same thing with them.....

My mom tells people its triangle Z. She makes it sound more like a math equation then a sorority. Its Kind of funny. I have gotten the AZ also. I am always amazed when people don't know/realize they are greek letters.

Some years ago, I worked at a Non-profit womens self help group and 95% of the staff were women. Well, A new co-worker came to work wearing a pink top with a green blazer. The pink & green craze had not caught on back then so if you were wearing the combination, it was generally assumed you were an AKA. So I asked the woman (a black woman), "You're an AKA?" Her reply ""Yes, I'm also known as ME!" So I smiled and said "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.? When did you cross?" The look she gave me was priceless. "Ummm, I'm not in a sorority."
Yeah...All righty then....
*End hijack*

A few years ago at our activities fair at the beginning of the year, this student, who I later found out was our resident....
umm... person with significant psychological issues. Came up and asked me why the Greek letters didn't spell words. Like CAT and BAG. I explained to him that the letters all had deeper symbolism and meaning, but uh-uh, he wasn't going for that. He started demanding to know why they didn't spell words, and going off on how stupid he thought it was that they didn't spell them! He then started yelling it, and wouldn't leave, so I had to grab a campus security officer to escort him away! In the meantime, all of our fraternity men were laughing their asses off, because when he started asking them they said, "We don't know, but go ask our Greek Advisor, he'll know why."

"Hmmmm...AOII= Alpha Omega Pi"....Which then is quickly followed by..."Isn't that the sorority that Christina Ricci is in during the movie Pumpkin?"
What truly amazes me are OTHER GREEKS who do not know appropriate Greek letters!

I've never heard anyone think my letters spelled something different.
One time though, the chapter president at the time and I were joking around about people who didn't know the Greek alphabet and might think our letters said T T B O I.
Yeah, you had to be there...that or maybe it's just seems funnier in my head

We get ROB a lot too - especially from parents.

my letters are Nu Sigma Chi (i don't feel like busting out the symbol font)
people think it spells NEX (as in next....)
they see the sigma- and think my shirt says SEX
we're known as N E X (which drives me crazy- but its been around too long to banish it)
our lettes on the house were pulled off by one of the frats- and so it spelled VEX and then the rest of the N was gone- so apparently we were Sigma Chi (and a sophomore was overheard by a sister saying- oh there is a party at the old sigma chi house... )

Maybe they're confused with Alpha Phi? hmm Completely random but when I was pledging I remember being SO confused by Alpha Phi. They weren't rushing girls when I went through rush so I didn't hear about then until I got into the greek system. I remember going over the Greek Alphabet in my head thinking, where is there a "PHEE"?? Alright I'm done with the randomness now...
