Alpha... I have run many a marathon. Let me give you one word of advice. VASOLINE. I know you have heard this before, but when I say put it everywhere, I mean literally, or you will start to bleed in places you didn't know you had. Good luck, you will love it. LOVE IT.
And remember, more people drop out at 20 miles than at any other point. So, even if you have talked yourself out of finishing (which you won't) make yourself go to mile 21. It looks a lot less daunting at 21 than 20. It is strange, but true. As they say, "20 miles is the halfway point of the marathon"...
It will be so fun, you won't even know you are hurting
Seriously, the first 15 miles will pass b4 you know it.

By the way, I've read before that while training for marathons, you don't really have to run more than 12 or so miles at a time. I'm not sure why, but I think I read that in a running magazine in high school. Does anyone know if that's true?
|
Hmmm, bad idea. Could it be done? Sure. Bad Idea...

Congratulations on getting involved with TNT ... My advice on fundraising is to really take advantage of your mentor and TNT staff. Do your letters - early and send to everyone you know, take a photo with you and honored teammate, Do canister drives at Walmart sign up for dates early. Ask, ask and ask people ... you will be suprised at who gives what. Try to do a bar/restaurant fundraiser - if you are into that kind of thing, there are dozens of ways to do this. Good luck.

I have heard BodyGlide works better. I am really a minimalist - did two halfs and all long training sans sunscreen or bodyglide ... I know thats not great. I promise I will change for SD.

I couldn't have said it better. When did you first notice this tendency toward insanity?
Seriously, Great cause. Best of luck.

Oh, all was good.
Finished under goal time in 5h47m and something seconds. Ran the first half and had a blast ... last half it got hard as heck and very rough on mental, emotional and physical levels. San Diego is beautiful.
Here are photos ... although no one can laugh at the last two ... especially the one with my eyes closed!!

More to come soon, I promise.

I just signed up for the Chicago marathon in October. Jeez, I think I am crazy. This marathon stuff gets addictive, eh????? Anyone ever run the Chicago marathon? As a former Chicago resident, I am pretty excited to experience the city on a whole nother level.

Awesome, congrats. Yes, I have run chicago. It is fast, and larger than San Diego I believe. You will likely run a faster time, depending on the wind. Congrats, you are now addicted.

This might be a really stupid question, but here goes: does everyone actually run the entire marathon? Aren't there some people who stop and walk fastly? I just can't imagine running that much in one day...but I guess that's why you start training 6 months in advance.
I'm going to do the Race for the Cure in Baltimore in October, but that's only a 5K. I wonder if I could ever do a marathon without dying!?
