Such a busy time

Hypo's prom was Saturday night and she was beautiful. Senior honors night was last week and she got the high school Phi Beta Kappa award, was recognized for being in the top 10 and was given the Excellence in English award (each department recognizes one student for their achievement in that subject). The teacher who presented the English award was her creative writing teacher who encouraged her to enter the Scholastic Arts & Writing competition last year and who wrote recommendation letters for college and for Barnard's pre-college program. She talked about her gift for writing both creatively and analytically. It was so sweet. I wish I had gotten it on video, but I didn't know it was going to happen! AP tests were last week.

Tomorrow is senior skip day and hypo is legitimately sick. Poor kid. I think she ran herself into the ground last week. A week from tomorrow is her last day of high school with graduation on June 1st and her graduation party June 2nd.

It is starting to hit me that this is really happening.

Did you see that President Obama was speaking at Barnard's commencement today?

My daughter has AP French tomorrow...it's a completely designed test this year, so the prep. books haven't been updated. She's the only one taking it, because they don't have AP French at her school. I hope it doesn't mess up her score average. She feels pretty confident, but it's a big unknown with the new test. She has AP Human Geography on Friday. She will be sooooo glad when these are done! Prom is Saturday...she'll be ready to celebrate!

Good luck to your daughter! As I told mine, these AP tests don't really matter much. Sure, you can get credit if you do well, but it's not a big deal and nothing to sweat over. I was thinking that she'd do better if she wasn't all stressed out about it.

Yes, I did see that Obama was speaking at Barnard. It caused some friction with Columbia as some of their graduation activities (for the General Studies college) had to be re-arranged due to security issues.

From what I've read, Columbia College (President Obama's alma mater) saw it as a snub because they've been asking him since he was a Senator.

Making as much money as she can! She has two babysitting jobs which, together, make a full time job. She and her friends are also planning a trip to Chicago via Amtrak.

She is considering looking for a third job, in waitressing, because she kind of wants that kind of experience before she goes to NYC due to the income potential if she could get a job as a waitress, but we'll see.

How are the APs for your seniors so far? The boy had 1 last week, 2 today, and 1 next week. French was today which he said was horrible but the Comparative Government exam was easy.

She had all 3 of hers last week. I posted about her English one, the last one she took, where she totally lost it and after writing a few paragraphs analyzing a poem, she ended up writing a diatribe to the grader about how poems as an art form should not be analyzed because they mean different things to different people, which is why they are an "art" and not a science, that standardized tests don't accurately measure anything, that she hadn't had a good night's sleep in days and she missed lunch three days that week because of AP tests and she ended it by saying she couldn't write another word and she just wanted food and a nap. Yeah, I'm thinking they didn't go so well...lol. She said she'll be surprised if she even gets a 3 on any of them. She had Calculus, Psychology and English. I believe she wrote the Calc grader a note too, commending them for understanding Calculus so well that they qualified to be a grader but that she really doesn't like Calc at all.

I highly recommend Megabus for the Chicago-Detroit route. Not as romantic as the train, but it costs like $3.

Today was hypoallergenic's last day of high school. Why did I encourage my baby girl to go to college so far away? She could have been going to Michigan, just a 45 minute drive away but nooooooooo, I encourage her to go to NYC.

This is going to be rough.

My daughter didn't think French was too bad...she was worried about it because of the new format/test design this year. She said the only bad parts were that one of the French speakers mumbled in the listening section interview (with 2 speakers), and she said she got cut off before she could finish recording her presentation. She thinks she did well on the other parts, though.

I know what you mean. Our youngest is going to school 15 hours away. And it's located a fair distance from a major airport. With all the decent schools in Virginia, he picked one in the middle of nowhere. His sister also went to a school in a rural location but at least it was only 4 hours away and when I went to school 12 hours from my home it was city to city. However, he felt the best fit at this school so we will all deal.

I'm kind of dreading all those round trips to Roanoke Airport, with the little commuter planes. *sigh*

A lot of kids fly out of Dulles even though it's several hours away.

This was made for a brand-new alumna. They graduated this morning.
