He will live on through his movies and charity. He did leave an amazing legacy and will be greatly missed. some of my favorite pantry items are from Newmans Own..
Nell's Breakfast blend coffee - can't live without it!
Raspberry Walnut vinegarette salad dressing
Sockarooni spaghetti sauce
N.O. olive oil

In the era of Paris, Lindsey, and other assorted "stars", he stands as an example of what a life well-lived in Hollywood looks like; Married to the same woman since forever, talented and hard-working in his craft, and one who used his celebrity to make the world a better place. I hope he rests in peace, and his family and fans can take comfort in the fact that his legacy, as noted before, will live on.

There have been rumours, at least locally, that he had been battling cancer for a while now. He was very involved in local politics and the arts (especially a community theatre in his town).

Although I expect that there may a lot of people at his memorial/funeral/wake, I do hope that people respect his family's privacy. People in that area are usually really good when it comes to giving people their space.

As for calling him a "celebrity" - someone else did - I don't see him as such. He was an actor and a philanthropist. The world is missing a good man now, but his legacy will go on.

Yeah - I'd heard from people who had seen him around Westport and around the area that he appeared to be pretty sick. It seems like they kept it pretty guarded though; there are enough famous people who live in that area that the locals are pretty good about giving the families their space.

I didn't call him a celebrity - I said he USED his celebrity for good. It was something he used, not something he was. Big difference, I think.

eta - in an interview that they played on NPR Paul himself said he wanted to use his celebrity for good.

I can't believe I missed this!

RIP, Paul. You'll always be the ever-hopeful Reggie Dunlop to me.

Eta: This may be somewhat inappropriate, but I just found this on imdb.com:
"Paul Newman has stated on many occasions that he had more fun making this film [Slap Shot] than on any other film he has starred in, and that it remains his favorite of his own films."
