Well, our handshake has to be learned, but as an Alum, time can dim the memory! To enter certain Events, one better know it. All the same, not by Chapter!

There is a thing that we have, it is called a card showing membership. If there is still adoubt, then ask for another ID with that same name!

When I was in grad school at University of Memphis, I made friends with this guy. Great personality, very likable. After a few months, I began catching him in lies about things (stories about his undergrad days, where he had lived before, his relationships with girlfriends). I put some distance between us, but was still friendly. He was convinced that we were best friends. One thing I didn't realize was how closely he listened to my fraternity stories.

One day I was leaving campus and passed by the off campus bookstore/Greek store. I saw Philip coming out of the store wearing a Sigma Chi cap. I pulled up next and asked what was up with the cap. He told me that he had bought it for me and was wearing it to 'get some wear and tear into it' before he gave it to me. I was suspicious, but didn't confront him about it. He gave me the cap. Couple of weeks later, I go over to his apartment. Walking through the apartment, I see a Sigma Chi shirt over a chair. Again, what's going on? "Oh, I saw that and thought you might like it." But, I could tell that the shirt had obviously been worn. Okay. A couple of weeks later, I see a truck driving near campus. Sigma Chi sticker in the back window. Guess who? I caught up with him later and, very politely but firmly, informed him that under no circumstances was he to have that sticker in his window. I let him know that I understood and wished he could have been a Sig, but he was not. He scraped it out and I never heard another thing about it.

I graduate and move to Dallas. About six months later, I am talking with a friend from Memphis on the phone (a Phi Psi). Robert says: "Hey, I met a fraternity brother of yours. Philip." WTH????? I ask Robert for more information and got even a bigger shock. Philip was basically giving people my background story as his. Telling people he was a Sigma Chi. And even telling Robert a couple of funny stories that happened to "him" that really happened to me. I don't know what happened to him since. He may still be running around Memphis telling people he is a Sigma Chi and giving them my life story as his.

Baylor's campus funny paper listed perping at a big fraternity rush event as an easy way to get free cigarettes and drinks.

Still not cool, though.

I knew some guys that pretended to be freshman rushees at a nearby campus and just took advantage of the free beer. They got bid cards but didn't sign them. LOL

This is sometimes true with sororities too! I transferred schools and met up with the chapter on my new campus. One of my sisters from the school I transferred from called me up and said, "We learned the wrong handshake!" I guess our president went to national convention and got a surprise when giving the handshake . The handshake we learned was very similar to the true handshake, but it was off a bit. I gave a disclaimer at my first formal chapter at my new school. Luckily for me, they thought it was funny .

Again, I've never seen this. I have no idea what she's talking about. I think I've read a lot of things on GC, but can't seem to recall someone talking about someone who didn't know the handshake.

Each thought the other was perpping because the grip was off. It was kinda amusing, to be honest. One guy said (paraphrasing), "If that's how you learned the grip, then I'd hate to think what you think the letters stand for." Guy two, "Oh, I know what the letters stand for. You're the one who doesn't know the grip." Guy one, "Oh yeah? Then what does XYZ mean?" Guy two, "You're wack if you think Immagonna tell you what XYZ means. You tell me." One, "Hell no. You tell me." It went on and on and on. They eventually got into it pretty good, and were asked to leave the party. I still don't know if it was ever resolved. All the girls there were like .
Example from this thread.

ETA: Thread about handshakes.

There was a girl in one of my classes who said she was a new member of Delta Gamma on my campus. She was wearing a DG shirt so I thought nothing of it..

So a week later in the student center, I was talking to one of my DG friends and I just casually mentioned "Oh I met one of your new members in my class, Becky _____, she's really nice." My friend said, "There is no Becky in this semester's pledge class." Their chapter has about 80ish girls so I thought that maybe she might just not have met Becky yet or something. I said "Oh that's odd because this girl totally said she was one of your new girls."

Well a week later, my friend tells me that she was out with a bunch of new girls. She mentioned that there was some girl named Becky _____ in class with one of her friends who says she's a DG. One of the new girls says "Oh MY GOSH! That's my ROOMMATE!"

The new girl goes home and confronts her roomie about why she's saying she's a DG. It turns out that the girl rushed DG at another school in OH, and didn't get a bid. She transferred and by chance ended up rooming with this girl. Becky said she'd forgotten all about DG til her roomie got a bid from them in the spring. Then, she found the perfect opportunity to "be a DG" by "borrowing" her roomie's DG stuff.

This girl was so mortified by her roomie stealing from her that she moved out of the dorms and into an apartment by herself.

We had a girl in my class that started as a new member but quit about two weeks into it. She then continued to wear all of our stuff througout the rest of her college days... which is funny because she never bought any of it and when our class threw in to make t-shirts the first time she "forgot" her money and checkbook - so she didn't even own it in part.

If I do remember correctly, our new member coordinator had to physically remove our new member handbook from her grip.

I heard about every couple months or so that she had been at such and such a party telling people that she was an Alpha Gam. It was quite a challenge to remind everyone that no, she was almost an Alpha Gam.

Just when I thought I had heard it all.

Thankfully I've never witnessed a situation like those mentioned, unless you count the rush thread fiasco courtesy of maxcheerz (I'm pretty sure that was the user name).

Yep, that was her. I recall smelling something foul to begin with -- it was too good to be true!

This is a giant WTF. Why quit and then pretend you are a member? That makes no sense. She had her chance and gave it up voluntarily. This blows my mind.

I just searched for the thread and couldn't find it. Did it get deleted or moved?
