Is this true? Pi Phi doesn't claim her on their website and I can't imagine they would leave her off if she were a member....

Quite honestly, if Pi Phi doesn't list her on their website, it's likely a mistaken claim. I've heard of Theta claiming her as well (search with her name in quotes, and you'll likely find something here). Most, if not all GLO's, want to recognize these women if they were members of their organization.
As I posted earlier, Sandra Day O'Connor had no opportunity to join an NPC organization as a collegiate, and since she also attended Stanford for Law school, she had no opportunity then, either. She may be an alumna initiate, but since the GLO in question doesn't list her, I doubt it.

I am SO proud that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a part of the AEPhi sisterhood. She's such a great role model for all women, not just AEPhis!

I am curious because I have never heard that Theta claimed Sandra Day O'Connor as a member or pledge (back when we had those )
Any idea where that claim is or was published?

In 1911 there were four members who were Betas.
Between 1881-1889 three members of the court were Betas.

ETA you can dig for this type of information here: http://politicalgraveyard.com/offices/judic1.html

I have no idea if she is a Pi Phi or not... However, several years ago she was in our Arrow with her granddaughter (who at the time was too young to be in college) about taking your children to work, etc. (It is possible that I am getting my magazines mixed-up, but I do not think so).
It is hard to find out about public figures on our website... For obvious reasons, their contact information is not listed on the Sister Only side. As for our Famous Sister site, there are several Pi Phi's not listed... I am interested in finding out though... Maybe, I will post the question on our site.

Sandra Day O'Connor information came from here....
http://www.negapc.org/greeklife/famo...rity_women.htm
But, looking at the Pi Beta Phi website from Stanford, where she attended undergraduate, it says:
"Cal Alpha was the first Pi Beta Phi Chapter established in California. It was originally chartered in 1893, two years after Stanford University was founded. However, in 1897, anti-fraternity legislation forced the chapter to withdraw. It was re-established in 1905 and the Pi Phis inhabited what is now the French House until 1944 when Stanford imposed the infamous ban on all women's fraternities.
In December of 1977, the Board of Trustees voted through Title IX to lift the anti-fraternity ban. By April of 1978, a group of fifteen pledges participated in Stanford's first Rush since 1944. California Alpha was officially rechartered during a long weekend of initiation, banquet, and reception."
So, I guess she's not! Unless she's an alum initiate.

Hey Danielle,
Would it be easier to go back and edit the letters into your excellent list of all of the Justices?
I know that wouldn't give us a list of how many pledged any GLO, but most of us can count. Well maybe.
Appreciate the list and feel free to ignore this -- just seems to me that it would be easier since you've already done the original list.

Three Phi Delts have been Supreme Court Justices, including one Chief Justice.
The previously mentioned Sherman Minton, and
Associate Justice James Clark McReynolds
Chief Justice Frederick Moore Vinson
I'm continually impressed with the number of famous Phis I find when I reasearch a specific area.
