it also depends on what's considered greek, many of these justices are members of a law fraternity such as Phi Alpha Delta or Phi Delta Theta, which are professional organizations

From the Beta Theta Pi HQ website:

"There was a Beta on the Supreme Court from 1877 to 1975, including the late Justice William O. Douglas, Whitman ’20. In 1911 there were four members who were Betas. Between 1881-1889 three members of the court were Betas."

Chief Justice Tom Clark was a Delt and was Chief Justice at the same time as being National President of Delta Tau Delta.

True, and William Brennen, who was on the court during some of the same years was also a Delt.

I don't know about Sandra Day O'Conner's post-collegiate greek involvement, but she was an undergrad at Stanford in the 1950's, a time during which NPC sororities, at least - and from the text of the Board of Trustees meeting abolishing the sororities, I would be inclined to say all sororities - were banned.

edited to add emphasis

Just to clarify Phi Delta Theta is a member of NIC and is not a professioanl law fraternity, but a social organization. I think you may mean Theta Delta Phi.

:-)

My bad. Brain fart. I meant Delta Theta Phi. There's another one too, but we don't have a chapter at my law school

Unless he became an honorary member or alumnus initiate, he probably wasn't in an NIC GLO. He attended Catholic schools, Mount St. Mary's College & Seminary (now University), the College of the Immaculate Conception (which merged with Loyola University of New Orleans (LUNO)) and Georgetown University, which did not have these types of organizations.

From what I understand, MSM & Georgetown still don't have them. However, LUNO did establish Beta Epsilon Gamma Gamma Alpha Rho Sigma (BEGGARS) in 1923. It was the first fraternal organization authorized by the Holy See to exist on a Jesuit campus.

In case you didn't know her affiliation Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an AEPhi alum from our Kappa chapter at Cornell. Also proud to say she is from Brooklyn, New York and went to same high school as a quarter of my chapter.

I'm pretty sure that Beta has had the most. I think that I once read that they had 4 brothers on the Supreme Court at the same time.
