In the 45 yearbook, if I am remembering correctly, USC had about 21 chapters of NPC groups. KKG new on campus that year. Amongst the houses now at USC, KKG is still the youngest. Sigma Kappa which colonized in 88, closed in I think 94, when USC greek system's #'s declined. Several other houses also closed, but most were older than the KKG chapter.
Actually Alpha Phi is the youngest at USC....in 1947 they were chartered I believe!! Just a tidbit from all my Alpha Phi girlies at USC!!

Well the Director of Greek Life at USC is an AEPhi and she really really has been pushing to get AEPhi back on campus since USC just opened up to expansion this past year. I haven't talked to Beth Saul (the Greek Life director) since last year when I went to USC, but I know she was really pushing for AGG (my local jewish sorority) to become a part of AEPhi and for AEPhi to return to campus (they were there in the late nineties).

Very random that you brought this up, because the yahoogroup was just compiling a list of closed chapters

i'd love to see a chapter at USC... we could use more Cali chapters!
What can I do to encourage the re-opening of Theta Sigma? Since I'm taking time off of school I definitely have time to devote to this cause but I don't know what to do!! Should I talk to our CDC? Email someone? Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Do you belong to KD and a local? How does that work out?

ooh its very exciting to hear we are working on getting a chapter there - its a great school!! is alpha gamma gamma seriously considering it?

also i am also really curious about how belonging to a national and a local social sorority worked. when i first saw your signature I figured Alpha Gamma Gamma was a honorary/ professional GLO. What would have happened if your local had affiliated with AEPhi while you were still a member. I am very curious because we were going to try to encourage one the locals at a nearby campus to affiliate with AEPhi but we didn't even bother when we found out that some of their actives had disaffiliated from two of the nationals on campus. we figured that would make it impossible for them to affiliate with us until those members became alumnae.

Well, I used to attend the University of Southern California. At that school, I was a member of Alpha Gamma Gamma, a local jewish sorority. I was extremely involved with it, on exec board and very dedicated to them. However, due to a whole range of problems (USC is 35k per year and I was going to lose my scholarship because of my grades, and I was having medical problems) I had to move home in the middle of the Spring 2003.
Because I loved Alpha Gamma Gamma, I decided that I would rush when I got to Arizona State University. So I did, and I joined Kappa Delta!!
That is how I can be a member of both sororities!!

--If AGG goes AEPhi (there is alot of controversy over whether or not to do this if there was ever the option), then I'm not sure what would happen!!

Rachel,

I would now love to see Theta Sigma Chapter reopened. My daughter just informed me today that USC just jumped really high on her list of pref schools. She had been really hot for Penn State until recently. Would love to have KD open while she is there so she will also have a chance to become my sister!

Hmm that''s really interesting. I'll have to look at the old yearbook again. I am sure both Aphi and KKG are in it, but it definitely mentions that that is KKGs first year...

thanks for the info!

Several people have asked what they can do to get their GLO chapter to recolonize -- specifically this has been KD but of course it could be any GLO.

For NPC groups it takes money, alumnae support, and money.

Competitive housing is critically important. If the chapter house was sold then they have to rent or buy one. If the chapter house is still owned then they have to wait until the lease ends or break the lease. After that comes remodeling, which could be extensive. [That happened at my chapter house -- the guys who leased it were so p.o'd at being evicted, even though the terms of the lease were not violated, that they really trashed the place.]

Usually by the time a chapter closes they've been on a decline for a number of years. The alumnae are burned out. Their memories may be long and they may not have the energy to work with a collegiate group again. It may have been so long since the chapter closed that there isn't a pool of energetic young (relatively speaking) alumnae. The local alum club, if there is one, may not be strong enough to provide advisors aswell as keep up its own activities. Though recolonizations (as with new chapters) include AI, an advisory council of only AIs would not be effective.

Your continuing financial support of your fraternity is so important! In addition to your (deductible) foundation contribution you can also make a (nondeductible) contribution designated for extension. Every $10....$25....$50 helps!

And, of course, it takes an invitation from the College Panhellenic to get the ball rolling in the first place.

Ahh! I WAS wrong! I just looked it up and it says that Kappa was founded at USC in 1947 and Alpha Phi is 1945! Argggh, I always get my facts confused!!

No matter who was first or last, the important thing is to try and get re-established.

LXA is using a two pronged offensive about Chapters!

1. Look at New possibilities, where the school is large enough and the School wants more involvement.

2. Re-opening Chapters that have been closed or stating new Colonies. Here again, with the blessing of the College and the feeling of the Campus.

Just to name a few of Chapters Re-opened: U. Mo., U Ark, Getteysburg, Pa, UnCo. Kent State, Valparasio U, USC-Akien, Loyal Marymount ULA, and some others.

This is basically the only way there is a sembelance of order!

Do Both sides, the Old and the New.

We all need to Grow, or maybe waste into dust as did the Dinasors?

I may not agree wiuth evrything My International does, but at least there is a plan of action!

Guessing you are talking about one of the two locals @ CSI, right? Do you know whats going on with Queens, I heard rumors of an AEPhi colony.....

I definitely think that USC needs another sorority on campus. Their recruitment numbers have been steadily increasing whereas UCLA's have been jumping up and down with each year. This is where a problem unforunately lies for all of you KD and AEPhi USC expansion advocates... althoough KD and AEPhi at UCLA both have amazing chapters and wonderful girls (my two dorm roommates were AEPhi and KD ), they have both had trouble reaching recruitment total and chapter total for several years now to the decrease in Greek life. Not to burst anyone's bubble, but I'm sure that USC will consider that their new colony might would not have a strong collegiate chapter nearby and their nationals might not want to open another chapter with a nearby chapter already struggling. Therefore, it might have an effect on the sororities they invite to colonize at USC. Of course, I could be totally off-base but just thought I would share these facts but I would love to see either of these sororities at USC...their greek system definitely needs some new blood in it.

yep, i am talking about CSI. when it was originally formed one of the locals expressed some interest is pursuing affiliation with AEPhi but when they heard about the NPC rule not permitting former NPC members who disaffiliated to affiliate with another NPC they decided to become a local.

As for Queens College I have no idea!! My national hasn't mentioned anything (but then again they didn't contact us when the NYU colony was first starting up despite being the closest collegiate chapter - we found out through the rumor mill) and the sisters from my chapter don't have any friends involved in Greek Life over there so we wouldn't have heard that way. If they are doing it they must be in the formative stages because they weren't listed in the colony section of this semester's directory.

I actually heard the rumor from you first so if you hear anything let me know. I would love to see a chapter there though. I have been really wanting to see another chapter at a CUNY.
