I think the voting thing is okay, because honestly, a girl initiated at one chapter may not have anything in common with another chapter. For example, my initiating chapter is about 60 miles away from another Gamma Phi chapter, and we've had several girls transfer to that school, but choose not to affiliate - our chapters are very very different: 20 sisters v. 120, tiny house v. mansion on a lake, etc. Ignoring those differences, the chapters are composed of very different types of girls. Yes, they are still our sisters in Gamma Phi Beta, but that's about all we have in common. I briefly thought about transferring to that school and I know I wouldn't have affiliated if I had - I just wouldn't have fit in. I think it's a little silly for us to be so sunshiney to assume that every XYZ all over the country would fit in with every XYZ chapter - it's just not true.

I would have to agree with the last two posts. I got lucky that the two chapters I was part of were pretty similiar because there are ones I would not have fit into either.

I know that Tridelt has actually voided this voting process and a sister is a sister no matter where she initiated; this changed something last fall becuase of many girls not being voted into transfer membership. From what I was told by an ex-traveling DDD consultant from U of Florida chapter, that some girls predominantly in the south (sorry southerners, that is what told me) many girls will pledge at a less-successful chapter and then transfer to a better chapter at a different school. These girls at the new school would then rarely vote transfer membership for their transplanted sister. I couldn't believe this when she told us and the lengths some girls would go to be a XYZ at a specific chapter. My chapter has had several transfers while I was there and it was never a question if we would vote them in but some girls didn't fit into the chapter as well as others did. Different chapters have different dynamics and personalities that they attract so I can understand that some transfers are not going to mesh well with their new chapters.

Yea I definately think it's crazy the lengths that some people will go to be an XYZ at a specific school... no matter where you go or what the chapter is like, they are still your sisters no matter what, so I guess that's why it makes me sad that some people say stuff like "I just pledged and I've decided to transfer.. where are the good chapters of XYZ?"
On a happier note, my chapter recieved 2 transfer sisters this semester and we are so excited to have them here! They are wonderful girls and we are happy to have them with our chapter

Texas Princess,
I am definitely feeling you on that one especially due to some recent posts.

I understand why they would do voting and the semester waiting time. This semester, we had a girl transfer over from another school. She was already Phi Sig, we let her in, now she has caused us nothing but grief, getting us in trouble for dirty rushing (well almost in trouble) steering away potentials with what she says, trying to over run our executive board with everything she wants to do and change. We have been at our chapter longer and she doesnt like that we are a small chapter, at 20. She came from 100 girls. She said we need to change our image, I DONT THINK SO!! If people dont like us for who we are, tough poopy! So sometimes I do think it is necessary to get to know someone and then vote them in.

Yes, at Univ of Florida, the sororities vote on anyone who wants to affiliate. They've been doing it this way for at least 20 years.
And it is true - many girls pledge sororities at smaller schools then come to UF, expecting to join the house there. But, sometimes, they get voted down.. not a happy ending.
Finally...FAUNikki, why didn't you guys vote on this girl, before she came in?
