My boyfriend pinned me in college, but his brothers never did anything to him besides make sure he got really drunk at our party.
At our ceremony, my boyfriend said that he was giving me his pin as a way to unite the two most important things in his life. Because I understood what it meant for him to allow me to wear his letters, I think it made that statement that much more special to me.

BTW, we had 6 candlepassings in 1 semester when I got pinned. It was insanity!
