guys, what gives?
So my boyfriend is a Delta Chi, and this past week one of his brothers got engaged. And apparently, all the other brothers have been doing is teasing this poor guy relentlessly. And then my boyf told me that if any of them lavalier a girl, the other brothers will throw that guy in the pond behind the fraternity house. I have also heard of other fraternities doing similar things to brothers who lavalier a girl or get engaged. What gives, guys? Why do you tease a guy who is committed instead of being happy for him?

only an incidental here....but I personally think lavaliering is retarded (sorry if that offends anyone here).
|
In my ex-boyfriends fraternity if a guy lavaliered a girl he got "treed". They took him out back and literally tied him to a tree and did whatever they wanted to him. They usually throw all kinds of sh*t on him, make him drink, and there have been reports of brothers peeing on them.
Let's just say, very few women are lavaliered... |
Dunno - I had quite the opposite experience when I got engaged. There were congratulations all around.
I can certainly see why other guys would act that way, though. It's a guy thing. |
Brother Jon, it is a stupid thing!
When a Guy gets engaged or Lav. it should be a happy time for both. I am Sure all of the Brothers Knew the Lady he is Betrothed to> He will have enuff hell when he gets married so why make it worse? Give them the small moment of glory be for hell starts!:( We raze a bit and then go serenade the Lady at her house or dorm so all can see that there is true Love, YUK!:o |

Tradition, tradition, tradition. We are guys, this is what we do. You guys out there, would you rather form a circle with candles and sing like the sororities do when someone gets lavilered?
|
Heyyyyy...... what's wrong with singing? ;-)
I like lavileiring.... I think it's sweet. Just take it for what it is, a gesture, and leave it at that. |
I never got dropped (that's what we call lavaliering) by my husband. But when we got engaged everyone in his fraternity thought it was great and congratulated him, bought him drinks, hugged me, hugged him, told us how excited they were, etc. It was definitely a good experience for him. However, if I had been a roboslut or a total bitch or something, they might have razzed him. Typically on our campus, his fraternity doesn't do stuff like that but a few fraternities at our alma mater have been known to tie a brother to a tree, or just generally give the guy a hard time (hence, not many fraternity guys getting engaged before graduation...).

ROBOSLUT!!!! [
oh man....... when I can get up off the floor long enough to stop laughing I'll let you know :D |
My big sister and her boyfriend, who is in a fraternity, have been dating for about 3 years now, and he has been adamant about the fact that he will never lavalier her. He is strongly against this because he earned his letters, he knows what they represent, and she doesn't. Period. She has no clue about his letters, and therefore doesn't get the privilege of wearing them. Of course she is a little miffed, but she's just waiting for the ring! Do a lot fraternity men out there share this sentiment? I think it's a very sweet tradition, but I can understand the problem some guys may have (and not just about the abuse that goes on afterwards!)
Sidenote (turning out to be longest post ever, sorry!): My twin was lavaliered a few months ago, and her bf had to become a "Pledge for the Week" after giving away his letter, and some of the things they made him do were hilarious. Wear a pledge jersey all week, do endless pushups upon command, and the funniest thing was he had to carry around a G.I. Joe sticking out of his pocket, and whenever someone asked what it was, he had to give a speech. It went something like this: "This is my action figure, without it, I am nothing, without me, it is nothing. I love my action figure, and he loves me." This guy is in the Marine Reserves, and he was so good natured about the whole thing, it was sweet! |
Lavaliering is an easy and cheap way for a guy to make serious brownie points with his girl to save for a rainy day.
A promise of a promise . . . I can totally see guys giving the chap a hard time. |

I think that's sweet (with the GI Joe.) The thing about lavilering is that you have to think about it as an extension of the guy's feelings for you -- not just a promise ring. Meaning that he's sharing with you something that means SO MUCH to him -- I can't even imagine what it would take in a guy for me to give him MY letters. Makes a promise ring seem like nothing. :-) Of course I can say that -- I've never had either.
