Great story! I didn't realize that GPhiB was ever gone for a time at UCLA.
So, GPhiB recolonized in 2000.
AXO recolonized in 2008.
AGD came back in 2013.
AXD comes back to UCLA in Fall of 2016.
UCLA Greek Life is growing and growing!

And, the Greek Life office still expects NM classes this Fall of 60-70 with some groups totaling around 180-200. Most chapter dining rooms don't fit more than 120 and many of the GLOs are having to have chapter on campus (because our chapter rooms were built for a maximum of about 100).

Future expansion will be happening at UCLA. (At one point, 24 of the 26 NPC groups were on campus ...!) If your GLO isn't here, keep this info in the back of your brain!

Thank you for sharing your story - I really enjoyed it. It goes to show that, even if you're cut from your early favorites, you can still find a great home.

Yup - Gamma Phi was gone for about five years in the late 90's. Alpha Chi Omega was supposed to recolonize only a few years after Gamma Phi, but recruitment numbers started going down, and the expansion was pushed off. There was some Greek-wide discussion about their return my sophomore year (2002/2003), and I believe Panhellenic or Alpha Chi (or both) voted to hold off.

From what I'm hearing second-hand about Greek life at UCLA, the first thing that needs to be worked on is size parity. If several organizations aren't hitting quota, then it makes bringing on more chapters less beneficial to help even out those numbers. For whatever reason (campus or Greek life climate or coincidence), new chapters aren't thriving the way they are at other campuses.

Thanks for sharing! I figured that San Francisco would turn out to be Gamma Phi Beta, but I was sort of hoping for a surprise twist where Atlanta loved you so much (even though you didn’t attend their pref) that they still put you on the bid list, and that was where you would join.

I work with an AXiD chapter at a small college where we still do hand bid matching. We can (and sometimes do) put women on our 2nd Bid List who were invited to Preference but who did not attend for some reason. If they do not get placed, we then have the option to offer them a snap bid (of course, only those of us at Bid Matching and the PNM know this is what has happened). While this has only resulted in our offering a Bid a couple of times, the snap bid has always been accepted!

I suppose when using one of the computer programs, there is still a mechanism to allow for this same type of setup? I am assuming there is, because at another chapter, we have placed women on our invite list later in the week who were invited to earlier events but did not attend, but who we still wanted to see.

LABlondeGPhi --
I just pulled up last years recruitment #s and out of the 12 groups, 9 chapters are at total (160) and all of those 9 meeting or exceeding quota. 1 is 90% of total. As AGD just chartered, they are not at total (yet). The other chapter is not stagnant but gaining more members every year & closing the gap. I think by the time AXiD re-colonizes, all chapters will be close to similar size.

Lu - I sincerely hope that all the chapters thrive in the coming years, and I did not mean to be a negative nancy. I just want to see the whole community thrive, and to bring down those quota numbers!
